Domus - Jan Van der Roost
When composing this work the brief from the commissioning band was for the composer to base the work on a chorale-like subject matter and this he has done with aplomb. In the very first bars a chorale melody is presented and gradually the samethematic material is more extensively orchestrated with the melodic themes becoming more varied. With afew surprising harmonic turns the piece comes to a majestic end. This is a well-structured work of extreme elegance.

Robert the Bruce and the Spider (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Fraser, Bruce
King Robert the Bruce was hunted by King Edward the First of England and, so the story goes, was hiding in a cave. According to legend, he watched a spider attempting to climb a tree whilst weaving a web. It failed many times, but finally reached the top. This action gave Robert the Bruce the encouragement to persist against the English ant at the Battle of Bannockburn the English were defeated by the Scots. The rhythm which opens the piece in percussion spells out Robert the Bruce and this is used with an unusual effect in the middle section from the Percussion section, where the players gradually raise their sticks above their heads whilst beating out the Robert the Bruce rhythm pattern.

Spirit of Andalusia - Philip Sparke
Spirit of Andalusia was commissioned by The Glasgow Wind Band. The brief was to create a fascinating 5-minute opener, however, during the compositional process, the piece started to take the form of a Spanish influenced composition. The composer decided to stick to this involuntary development and started producing a tribute to Spanish music, in particular, Flamenco - which originates from the region of Andalusia. He uses exciting rhythms and colours from the musical culture.

Reverie - Robert Schumann
Severe and permanent damage to this hand prevented Robert Schumann from pursuing a career as a concert pianist. However, this tragedy allowed Schumann to compose an exquisite body of work, including orchestra, chamber and vocalworks. He most frequently composed for his own instrument, the piano. Henk Hogestein has chosen the famous Reverie from Scenes from Childhood and turned it into a moving arrangement for concert band. Dur: 3:00
