Glacier Canyon - Mike Forbes
Glacier Canyon is not specifically programmatic, but the piece has programmatic elements.?The work begins with the idea of walking up to and peering into a vast glacial canyon. It?then picks up steam as one imagines white-water rafting through the turbulent waters of the canyon below.?The folkloric middle section of the work evokes a sense of American natural beauty before one last romp through the rapids. A perfect selection to show off the musical skills of your young band at a festival.

Swingin' at the Riverside - Stephen Bulla
Feature anywhere from one Saxophone up to the entire Sax section in Stephen Bulla's jazzy new arrangement titled Swingin' at the Riverside. The quick, rhythmic swing-style music is catchy to say the least! It's the perfect opportunity to "lighten up" during the next concert performance. In addition, it's a good piece to program just before or after that large work that's taxing for the Brass players. It's lots of fun for Brasses to play but gives them plenty of short rests throughout so they can refresh their chops. Now's the time to let the Saxes shine!Light-hearted and fun!

Two Symphonic Interludes - Harrie Janssen
Based on the poems by German poet Carl Hauptmann (late Romanticism) and the English poet William Wordsworth (early Romanticism). Carl Hauptmann was in poor health as a child, but highly intelligent. He studied philosophy, psychology and biology. In the latter he was admitted to the degree of doctor. His marriage provided financial independence, so that he could focus on his studies. Hauptmann wrote various novels, plays, poetry and scientific works. Night Twilight floats above the valley's night mists are hanging, there's a whispering brook. Now the covering veil is lifting quite: come and look! See the magicland before our gaze: tall as dreams the silver mountains stand, crossed by silent silver paths shining from a secret land. Noble, pure, the dreaming country sleeps. By the path the shadow black and hogh of a beach. a wisp of a white smoke creeps to the dark'ning sky. Where the valley is the darkest hued countless little lights shine silently. O my soul! Drink of solitude! Carl Hauptmann Wordsworth 'introduced' a new type of poetry, based on the speech of the common man. This was his answer to the poetry of the classicism which was bound by rigid rules. His definition of poetry was: the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings from emotions recollected in tranquility. My heart leaps up when I behold a rainbow in the sky My heart leaps up when I behold A rainbow in the sky: So was it when my life began. So is it now I am a man. So be it when I shall grow old, Or let me die! The Child is father of the Man. And I could wish my days to be Bound each to each by natural piety. William Wordsworth In a truly poetic manner Harrie Janssen has transformed the contemplative thoughts of the poets into two compositions for Concert Band.

Space Lab - Giuseppe Ratti
A long pedal-note of evanescent chords, based on empty parallel fifths, announces the theme;flutes and reed instruments exploit some almost imperceptible micro-fragments, supported by muted trumpets, creating what is an almost surreal and spatial atmosphere. This was Giuseppe Ratti's starting point for his "Space Lab", a laboratory of sounds and, later (when the main theme is taken up once more), of rhythms. Although it may sound complicated, this piece is ultimately based on a single motif: the descending fourth played on the second beat by the woodwinds. In this piece, Giuseppe Ratti, with his usual pallet of clear, transparent colours at hand, appropriate for the general public, together with simple, effective themes, has sought to experiment with new atmospheres and rhythms. First of all we hear the entire theme in the Allegro. Then the rhythm changes in a simple but at the same time complex manner: almost a genetic mutation. The part leading up to the final Lento flows smoothly for the listener but requires great skill and experience on the part of those performing it. In the final lento the main theme reappears in all its simplicity and sincerity, purified of all contrasts. A metaphor for a life that leads us towards unimaginable frontiers but which, in the end, always brings us back to the point from where we started.

Romp! - Darren W. Jenkins
Romp! was inspired by and dedicated to the composers very cute tabby who decided that his computer table (where he composes) was his spot to be... also when coming up with ideas for this piece, it seemed to fit him very well. The piece represents how he tends to wake up instantly and spring into action... running and darting here and there. The solo breaks and legato section represents how he can shift gears, stopping quickly, then springing right back to his romping around. There is optional "cat meowing" at the end that can be done by one person, if your group has someone who does a good cat meow, or electronically if you have the equipment. Or you can leave it out, though it does add a nice touch.

Juggernaut - Gary D. Ziek
A juggernaut is a massive inexorable force that crushes whatever is in its path, and this dynamic concert opener certainly lives up to the title. Written in a moto perpetuo style, the intensity begins in the first measure and doesnt let up until the final measure is finished. Driving, frenetic ostinati alternate with heroic fanfares throughout, pulsating with seemingly unlimited and unyielding drive.
