Cloud(iu)s ... der Wolkenmann - Thiemo Kraas
4 Miniatures for Winds: 1. Wind 2. Storm 3. Rain 4. Sun and Snow There was a little child who enthusiastically told a story ... and a composer who was equally inspired by the child and its story to write these miniatures. At the premier performance of my composition "Arcus" in March 2011, when I explained how a piece about the rainbow came into being, a little girl came up to me and asked: "Thiemo, what about the man in the clouds?" I obviously had forgotten to include him, though he is as the little girl informed me of extreme importance in the sky: "He sits in the clouds and is responsible for the weather. He shakes rain, wind, storm or snow out of the clouds, he pushes them aside to let the sunshine through or he models them into funny figures, making people on earth smile." Fascinated by the girl's ingenuous ideas I created this small composition, sitting in my study and letting my mind wander into the sky. As the man in the clouds naturally has to have a name, I decided to call him "Cloud(iu)s ... man in the clouds". I dedicate this piece to the children of my beginner's band, who show me again and again how wonderful and precious it is to delight in the small things in life ...

No War - Marco Somadossi
The theme of this composition is immediately evident from the title, which almost requires no further explanation. It will never be possible to represent or reproduce the full implications of a tragedy such as war, all too often forgotten, concealed, exploited or written off as being an evil that is "necessary" for the development of civilisation. War changes the course of human history: man kills man, fathers bury their sons, children take up arms, and mankind is devastated by evil, choosing death over life. The atrocities, repeatedly perpetrated and evident to all observers, are an offence to human dignity. Yet they are tolerated and, at times, even re-interpreted as inevitable remedies for "obstacles" to the global economy, in order- it would seem- to build "a better world". And all this goes on despite the fact that the terrible scars left by past wars are still evident and should serve as a warning to ensure that such tragedies do not return to devastate our world. "No War" is thus a heart-felt protest against any form of culture that justifies war as a means of gaining wealth and power, satisfying the economic needs of the richest countries at the expense of the poorest nations. In so doing the one truly fundamental value is annihilated, that of human life.

Der Ritt der Walkren - Richard Wagner
Die Walkre (the Valkyries) is the second of the four works that make up the "Der Ring des Nibelungen" (The Ring of the Nibelung). It premiered in Munich in 1870. The "Ride of the Valkyries" is definitely the best-known piece from this opera andperhaps the most famous of all Wagners works. It was also used as the soundtrack during the helicopter attack in Francis Ford Coppolas film "Apocalypse Now".

Reflections on Paris - Fisher Tull
Reflections on Paris is the result of the composer's visit to the city in the summer of 1972. During one day of his stay in the city, he had the occasion to visit the Louvre, after which he strolled through the Tuileries Gardens, past the Place de la Concorde and up the Grand Avenue des Champs-Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe. The specific impressions of this excursion gave rise to the present programmatic composition. (15:00)

Trilogy
Three distinct movements make up this dynamic new suite by composer Bill Calhoun. The first movement, "In Changing Times," is written in a fanfare style, contrasted by the ponderous second movement, "Lament," which leads to the joyous concluding movement, "The Final Journey." A multitude of styles, timbres, and textures show off the composer's eloquence with the modern concert band.

Twist Of Fate - Larry Clark
Musical twists and turns abound in this compositional departure for composer Larry Clark. It contains all of his impeccable scoring and attention to detail, but is a refreshing change in sound and technique for this adept composer. The piece is at times energetic, and at other times, lyrical. Elusive and ever-changing in harmonic structure and rhythmic content, it all adds up to an exceptional new piece by one of the most popular composers of band music today.
