This piece was written to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Takayama Wind Orchestra, who also commissioned it. The historic city of Takayama draws numerous visitors from home and abroad, not just to see its well-preserved old houses and buildings but also because every year several historic processions take place, with beautiful floats. When these ride through the city, age-old melodies are heard played on wooden flutes, accompanied by muted drums. This image is evoked at the beginning of the work, followed by an archaic sounding melody in a typically Japanese pentatonic sequence, that develops throughout. In this challenging piece Eastern and Western influences alternate, creating a sensational and overwhelming musical effect! Duration: 9.45

Contrasts was written for, and dedicated to, trombone soloist Dr. Brett Baker. As the titles indicates, contrasting elements characterize this challenging piece. The slow movement Sounds has a somewhat dark and sombre atmosphere, with complex harmonies and special sound effects. However, the second movement, Caprice, is energetic, entertaining, virtuosic and somewhat whimsical - quite a contrast indeed with the first! Duration: 16.30

This work for soprano and concert band was originally written for a special occasion: the wedding of one of the composer's children. It therefore matches another piece written for a similar occasion, I Shall Love But Thee. The lyrics are from the book Respiro Neve by the internationally renowned art photographer Luca Artioli, who possesses poetic talent as well. The first movement is stately and serene as where the contrasting allegro is much more dynamic and cheerful, requiring the solid high register of the singer. The conclusion is festive and radiant, partly thanks to the contribution of a piccolo trumpet! This work is a wonderful addition to the band repertoire wanting to perform with an excellent vocal soloist!Duration: 6.45

Stepstones was commissioned by the Harmonie Victoria Titeng from Ttange (Luxembourg) for its 125th anniversary. The composer references the music of Rossini, who died 25 years before the commissioning band was founded. The second element this work refers to the legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein who was born at the time the band celebrated its 25th anniversary. Les Pecheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers) is an opera in three acts by French composer Georges Bizet, who particularly made his fame with his opera Carmen. The friendship duet Au fond du temple saint, generally known as The Pearl Fishers Duet, is one of the best known in the opera literature. This arrangement for two trombones was written for and dedicated to trombone legends Joseph Alessi and Jorgen van Rijen. It serves as a possible encore piece in combination with Two-Bone Concerto, which was also written for them. The duet can also be performed by two euphoniums, or as the original vocal duet for tenor and baritone voice. Duration: 4.30

Glorioso was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the Siena Wind Orchestra. The work opens after a short aleatoric intro, with an energetic and brassy one tone fanfare. The note F acts as an omnipresent note, and is also used as a bridge into the second, rather static movement. A noble sounding theme leads to an impressive climax, shortly followed by the spectacular and virtuoso finale, which is built on the musical elements that have been heard before. Stylistically, this sparkling finale is clearly influenced by Dmitri Shostakovich, hence the use of the famous signature used by the Russian Master: C, D, E flat, B (or C flat). A glorious finish to a special work that highlights various facets of the modern concert band.Duration: 15.30
