At the end of the work, both versions of the theme are stated together to bring the piece to a triumphant climax.

Together with his good friend Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst had a strong liking for the abundant folk music of the British Isles. This influence is heard in many of his works and is perhaps strongest in his Second Suite for Military Band and in the Saint Paul Suite for string orchestra. This work was composed in 1913 for the school orchestra of St. Paul's Girls School in London, where Holst was the Director of Music. The suite opens with this exuberant Jig, a dance originating from Scottish and Irish folk music in alternating duple and triple time (6/8 and 9/8), which has been expertly arranged for concert band. TUBA CONCERTO (Gregson) (Tuba/Concert Band) - Gregson, Edward
Score & Parts. The concerto is in three movements, following the usual quick-slow-quick pattern: Allegro deciso, Lento e mesto, Allegro giocoso. The first has a sonata form shell with two contrasting themes, the first rhythmic in character, the second lyrical. There is a reference made in the development section to the opening theme of Vaughan Williams's tuba concerto, but this merges into the other material in the development section. The second movement unfolds a long cantabile melody for the soloist, which contrasts to a ritornello idea. The central climax of the movement triumphantly heralds the main theme from the band. The last movement is in rondo form, alternating the main theme with two episodes. The first of these is a broad sweeping tune, the second is jazz-like in style. After a short cadenza, reference is made to the opening of the concerto, and the work ends with a triumphal flourish. Duration: 18 mins. American Grade 4.5

Two Songs Without Words was composed in 1906 and was dedicated to Ralph Vaughan Williams and is similar in style to his two suites for band. The Country Song opens with the principal theme as an unaccompanied clarinet solo, followed by its repetition in the full woodwind section. The main theme returns in a "maestoso" setting before fading into a quite closing. Marching Song is characterized by a distinctive running sixteenth note figure. The principal melody, first played by the low woodwinds, is punctuated by these same running sixteenth note fragments. Both themes are again repeated with much variation before the tempo picks up into a short coda-style ending.
