Written by British composer George Butterworth in 1913, this classic work is based on two folk songs - The Banks of Green Willow and Green Bushes (the latter also appearing in works by Grainger and Vaughan Williams). Butterworth died in World War I at the age of 31, and this composition remains his most popular, regarded as an anthem for Unknown Soldiers. Letter from Home was commissioned as a patriotic work in 1944 by Paul Whiteman and his Radio Hall of Fame Orchestra. Composed toward the end of the Second World War, this music suggests the emotions of a soldier reading a letter from home. The music has been described as Copland's 'most sentimental' and reflects his own homesickness while visiting Mexico. This sensitive transcription by Brian Belski has produced another wonderful wind band setting from America's most iconic composer.

Under orders from General George Washington at the height of the Revolutionary War, a spy ring was organised for the purpose of providing critical information on the movement of British forces in the New York area. This dynamic work for band hints at the sense of danger and intrigue at the heart of this operation. The opening strains are propelled by an underlying rhythmic layer with flashes of colour from the winds and percussion. Freedom's Voice was commissioned to commemorate "The Voice of America," which began broadcasting in 1942 to combat Nazi propaganda with truthful news and information. VOA has served the world with a consistent message of truth, hope and inspiration. Opening with a mysterious and haunting melody representing the axis powers during the 2nd World War, the piece quietly builds into a voice of hope with the introduction of fanfare figures woven into a stoic rhythmic melody. The piece builds forcefully utilizing just these 2 simple musical elements into a broad finale representing the glory of freedom and free speech. Inspiring for both performers and audiences. £100.00Battles (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Dobson, Simon
Battles was written for the restoration of the epic 1927 silent film The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands, and was commissioned by the British Film Institute (BFI) in 2013. The work presents eight contrasting scenes as a continuous sequence: War, Introduction of Admiral von Spee, German Banquet, Building Steam/Preparing, Islanders, Call to Arms, Great Battle at Sea and Victory. The original score was written for a small chamber orchestra, symphonic brass and a substantial batterie of tuned and untuned percussion. Battles has been edited for symphonic wind orchestra with percussion and harp. Composer Simon Dobson says of his colourful score, "I wanted to keep things simple and clear, so there is a British theme, a fanfare march idea, often heard on trumpet, and a German naval theme, which is a more angular motif." This 4-movement suite tells the story of the beautiful French town 'Tulle' that was built on seven hills, just like Rome and Lisbon. The composer depicts the history of the town, as well as important events such as the bloodbath during World War II, the fabric 'tulle' after which the town is named and the festive annual fair. Since Tulle is also known for the production of accordions, the composer added an 'ad libitum' accordion part. A really charming and stylish concert or contest work! Duration: 9.00
