The crossing of a mountain pass is called traversada in Romansh. Such a crossing bears uncertainties and dangers, but also hope and new opportunities. Whoever sets out for a traversada is leaving behind what's familiar in the quest for new places and people. The piece Traversada, based on a Romansh song about farewell and uncertain reunion, musically depics such a journey. At the offset, off-stage soloists introduce fragments of the melody after which a dramatic narrative unfolds. An intense musical shift leads to a calm section, featuring the original melody in pulsating, muted sound colours. Towards the end, the whole structure is gradually rebuilt and leads to an exuberant ending, where the vibrant melodic motifs reemerge. Duration: 12.00

Providing a unique concert experience, this programmatic work depicts the story of what newspapers in 1916 described as "the poison soup plot"! At a Chicago banquet for dignitaries and politicians, a mass murder plot involving poison soup was hatched and nearly successful. However, thanks to a large number of unexpected guests, the dilution of the soup to feed everyone, and a quick thinking doctor with an antidote, tragedy was averted with no loss of life. Musical cues follow the events, and detailed program notes are included with the suggestion of including dancers to help tell the story. Imaginative and entertaining! Duration: 7.45

As with Gladness Men of Old is an Epiphany hymn, written by William Chatterton Dix on 6 January 1859 (Epiphany) while he was ill in bed. Though considered by many as a Christmas carol, it is found in the Epiphany section of many hymnals and still used by many churches. The music was adapted by William Henry Monk in 1861 from a tune written by Conrad Kocher in 1838. The hymn is based on the visit of the Biblical magi in the Nativity of Jesus. The hymn used Matthew 2:1-12 as a theme to compare the journey of the Biblical magi to visit the baby Jesus to each Christian's personal pilgrimage and as a reminder that it is not the value of the gifts, it is the value of giving and adoration to Jesus that is what Christians should seek. It is the only well-known Epiphany hymn or carol about the Biblical magi that avoids referring to them as either magi or kings and does not state how many there were. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

What starts out as a fanfare quickly becomes variations on the opening themes. As the title suggests, those themes are musical foreshadowing for the "Changes Ahead". With effective use of mixed meters, changing keys and rhythms there is an excitement that builds off of otherwise simple melodies. In the middle section comes a lyrical contrast with a sense of anticipation that the "changed" themes are coming back to a powerful ending, where all the themes combine. "Changes Ahead" showcases each section of the band, but more importantly it will challenge them to listen to other themes and compliment them. With lots of percussion, dramatic brass, flowing winds this piece creates a bold musical experience for the band and the audience. Duration: 5.45

A Felicitous Feline Ragtime Novelty. During the Jazz age of the 1920's, "the cat's pajamas" referred to anything special, unique or "cool." Musically speaking, the image of a cat in pajamas might suggest combining low clarinets (reminiscent of Prokofiev's use of a clarinet to describe the cat in "Peter And The Wolf") with a jaunty little tune in ragtime style, adding a few instrumental "meows," and you have (what else?): "The Cat's Pajamas: A Felicitous Feline Ragtime Novelty!" About 10 minutes walk from where the composer lives, there is a ford in a river. It is called The Splash and is one of his dog, Simba's, favourite places. No day is complete for him without a swim in the Splash, no matter what the weather is like. It is a lovely spot where the water swirls gently although on occasions when the river is in full spate it can rise quickly and become forceful. This piece reflects that, with its fluid motif running throughout. There is some decorative writing for the woodwind but the pace of the music is moderate and the technical demands are therefore easily manageable.
