Overture for Wind Band, Op. 24 - Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
Felix Mendelssohn composed the first of his two works for wind band in 1824 at the age of 15. This work, originally entitled Notturno, was scored for eleven winds. It was later rescored for a much larger contingent and publishedas Overture for Wind Band. The work is in two main sections, an extended andante introduction and the main body of the overture marked allegro vivace. While not generally considered one of Mendelssohn's masterworks, the Overtureof Band is nonetheless a valuable part of the band's early repertoire. This edition replaces the obsolete instruments with their modern versions and resolves many inconsistencies that plagued the original score.

Flourish for Wind Band was arranged by Guy Woolfenden from Arnold's Flourish for Orchestra (Op.112), which was written to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the granting of a Charter to the City of Bristol. A Masque (short for Masquerade) has been defined by Historians as 'A revel in which Mummers or masked folk come with torches blazing into the festive hall and call upon the company to dance and dice'. The chaos of this dramaticdance is depicted in this Masque by Hesketh. The main theme is bravura and is often present, in the background. The form of the piece is a simple scherzo-trio-scherzo. Colourful scoring (upper wind solos, trumpet and hornsolos alternating with full bodied tuttis) with a dash of wildness may tease both player and listener to let their hair down a little! 'Masque' has been transcribed for wind band by Kenneth Hesketh from his ScherzoforOrchestra, commissioned by the National Children's Orchestra in 1987.
