This delightful new composition takes its inspiration from the classic French swash buckling tale of Cyrano de Bergerac and his fight to win the love of the beautiful maiden Roxane. The subject was a perfect departure point for composing a symphonic poem with a variety of musical aspects reflecting the story. Lyricism (the theme of Roxane), dramatic episodes, as well as Debussy-inspired impressionist moments are some of the elements that give the band and its conductor the chance to expose themselves as a versatile ensemble being able to create colour, to sing and to play like virtuosi. In this moderately easy suite, Jan Van der Roost uses four authentic folk tunes from the Swedish-speaking part of Finland. These are from Nagu, Oravais, Lappfjrd and Karlebynejden, and have been joined together without pauses to form a continuous suite. The work begins with noble, almost meditative melodies. Gradually the tempo becomes faster, resulting in a brilliant and cheerful folk dance. The melody regularly goes from one band section to another ensuring that the timbre remains varied and there is no question of monotony. Four Easy Dances' is a four-part suite from Gobelin's 'Flexy Band Collection'. This series is meant for starter ensembles, i.e. youth orchestras which may not have the full range of instruments available yet. Therefore, it is possible to combine various instruments.
