Prior to the second world war Harry James was a 'name'. In 1939 this trumpet player/composer founded his own orchestra with which he undertook a series of successful tours. While Percy Grainger was known for creating a variety of ensemble settings for many of his folk songs, he never scored this work for wind band. An Overture for Concert BandThe overture Harlequin was composed in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Swiss Federation of Wind Band conductors. The striking ascending and descending melodic lines, heard throughout the composition, together with the intricate rhythm, form an entertaining whole. The work begins with a sparkling opening in which the strong rhythmic brass passages are surrounded by virtuoso woodwind embellishments. The theme of the energetic opening later returns in the Andante Rubato, but in a very different form. The middle movement develops towards a partial repeat of the opening section which leads quickly into a thundering Presto finale.Duration: 7:30

This work was originally written for flute, oboe (or two violins) and String Orchestra in 1923. This arrangement was premiered by the Stockholm Symphonic Winds in September 1993, conducted by the arranger. The style of A Fugal Concerto is very much neo-classical - all the rage at the time, although whether Holst had heard Stravinsky's examples is not known. In so far as the work is fugal, the adjective applies more to the texture than the form, although the second movement is canonic. The contrapuntal texture is not straightforward as phrases are displaced across barlines and cross rhythms are a feature. Nothing is allowed to settle until the folk tune is introduced toward the end. Yet, within this musical web, fascinating patterns and cross references reveal themselves.

In this colourful composition, Jan van der Roost recreates the energetic and multi-racial city life in Manhattan, using four contrasting movements. The opening movement is rather short and rhythmical. In the second "Picture", a variety of musical entities accumulate into a coloured "sound curtain", on top of which the brass section presents a broad theme. In contrast to the two previous movements, the third movement is extremely quiet, featuring the first flute, clarinet an oboe in broad melodies. Again, the orchestration plays an essential role. Following on a majestic "tutti" (almost "movie-like....) the serenity of the very beginning reappears. Finally, the nervousness and dynamic style of the two first movements come back in an exciting apotheosis with rich and sometimes surprising instrumentation which explores the multiple possibilities of the large symphonic wind band to the full.Duration: 13.00
