Punchinello (March) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Rimmer, William - Brand, Geoffrey

For many, Lancastrian William Rimmer is Britain's 'March King.' His marches are wonderful, every one with its own unique personality and form. Like Sousa, he also created and played a vast catalogue of band music ranging from waltzes and solos to great selections from the masters, but it is for his marches that he is remembered today. Pulcinella, often called Punchinello or Punch in English, is a classic character with a long nose which originated in the 17th century Italian Commedia dell arte.

This timeless melody by Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) is now chiefly remembered because of its inclusion in J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (hence its title), where it is treated to a variety of rich harmonisations. This setting features alto and tenor saxophones, who first play a lyrical descant to the famous hymn tune and then the melody itself, against a Bach-like obbligato in the upper woodwinds. Soft-shoe Shuffle (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Dating from the first decades of the 20th century and originating in vaudeville and the music hall, the soft-shoe shuffle was danced by tap dancers, wearing soft-shoes instead of their normal tap shoes. In this usually comic dance, the shoes were rubbed on the surface of the stage producing a characteristic 'swish'. Soft-shoe Shuffle can be made into a percussion feature by bringing the sandpaper blocks to the front of the stage - with added choreography, if required! A wonderful piece of musical humour for your concerts.Duration: 2:45
