Czech's in the Mail Polka was written as a tribute to the German-Czech style polkas that the composer became so familiar with during his undergraduate years at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was a regular member of a local polka band and played the occasional "dance job" on numerous weekends. (2:30)

Dances Americanesque - William Owens

This short three-movement tour-de-force is a musical collage of traditional dance forms. A lively Promenade opens with a fanfare statement and is quite regal in nature. The leisurely Waltz opens with flute solo and features rich harmonies and interesting textures throughout. The rousing Galop is characterized by a brisk tempo and whimsical technical passages. A wonderful collection of styles that ends in a rousing surge of musical energy!

Dancin' into the '20s (A Ragtime Dance Music Revue)

The music included in has been chosen to reflect some of the styles of music and corresponding use for exhibition and social dancing during the years leading into the 1920s. Each of the works has been orchestrated for wind band from extant published orchestra music of the period. The outside one-two step movements are energetic and perhaps more brusque in nature than and the from Victor Herbert's operetta scores. Each work may be programmed individually, and hopefully, the compilation will serve as a special example of music from a by gone era in American musical and theatrical history.
