Come the Brave - Douglas E. Wagner

Inspired by demonstrated courage, this original work is intended as a confidence-building piece for a young ensemble's first Spring concert. It serves as a perfect gateway into articulation and varying dynamics: the three most commonly occurring articulation marks (staccato, accent, and tenuto) have been included, as have the middle three dynamic markings (mezzo piano, mezzo forte, and forte) building and declining in intensity. Composer and fellow Texan, Brian Beck captures the southern rowdiness of frolicking in the water with friends and family. is a fun piece that will expand your student's harmonic vocabulary and is perfect for introducing and reinforcing accidentals that create interesting harmonies, all within a comfortable range. It also explores the many permutations of the 8th and 16th note combinations, as well as introduces and reinforces 7/8 time signature. Comet Ride - Brian Balmages

Based on the Deep Impact mission in which scientists crashed a probe into a comet at approximately 23,000 mph, the composer writes, "So what would it be like if someone could actually grab on to one of these comets and take a ride through the solar system?" Conveying that very feeling, the work begins with a sighting of the comet, then takes off on a wild roller-coaster ride, including glimpses of the sheer beauty of outer space. Compass Points West! - Carmen Gassi

The title was inspired by the title given to plan created in 2000 by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to modernize nuclear weaponry. Premiered by the Georgia Music Educators Association District X honor band in February of 2012 by the composer, the work is a mental 'soundtrack' he generated while reading a book detailing this initiative. Con Brio - Ralph Ford

Scored in traditional, or standard march form, this original work has all the opportunities for varied performance that are found in Sousa's revered marches. The trio section features a melody from "The Maple Leaf Forever" and is quite appropriate since the march was commissioned and premiered by the Con Brio Festivals in British Columbia.
