Brasstown Bald Overture

This concert and contest overture depicts the beauty and grandeur of the panoramic views from the top of Brasstown Bald mountain, the highest point in Georgia. An opening fanfare sets the mood with a middle section based on folk tunes. A fanfare return builds to a triumphant finish. Use this to develop listening and balance skills and to teach students about ABA form.

Bravery and Grace

This new piece from composer George Sweet is a delightful combination of Scotland the Brave and Amazing Grace. Each tune on its own is wonderful, but in Sweet's setting, they are masterfully layered to reflect the composer's Scottish-American heritage. This presentation of a Scottish melody with Americana-inspired harmonies is a stunning example of compositional craft.

Break Through

Break Through is a musical representation of one's struggle to pass through a barrier or move beyond an obstacle, either a literal breakthrough or a metaphorical achievement. The composition centers around the key of G minor to achieve a sense of dark, resonant emotion. The percussion is the heartbeat and pulse for the introduction of the piece, while the bass drum and gong rolls create a lugubrious timbre. Melodies and counter-melodies weave in and out of the musical texture. A struggle ensues leading up to the climax, following which there is a resolution to the relative major key of B-flat. Finally, there is a transition to a recapitulation of the opening theme, moving towards a contemplative ending in G minor.

Bridges

From its commanding opening phrase, Bridges sets a regal tone in an Americana style as the full ensemble plays the introduction with power and energy. The work creates contrast with more staccato, dance-like articulations but the piece always returns to the strong opening material. It is signature Alan Lee Silva at his best!

British Eighth - Zo Elliott

A classic march in a carefully edited version by Quincy Hilliard, Zo Elliott's British Eighth was dedicated to the members of Britain's celebrated Eighth Army and accepted on their behalf by General Sir Bernard L. Montgomery, their celebrated World War II Commander. In typical British March Style, it has great verve and a trio tune everybody will go out humming. Duration: 3'15"

Bugles and Drums, part of our Goldman series, is expertly edited by prominent bandmaster Edward Lisk and is considered one of his best works. Bull City Fanfare

This exciting opener or closer, easily accessible to most high school or community bands, is named for the "Bull City," Durham, North Carolina. An excellent showcase for each section of the band, the work features moving low brass lines, woodwind counterpoints, and an aggressive horn section. The percussion section is an integral part of composition with extensive use of toms, hand drums, tambourine, and cymbals. A strong option for contest, concert, or community band programming.
