A Little Night and Day Music

Commissioned by Carl Fischer for a school band series in the 1970s, A Little Night and Day Music is a classic of the modern band repertoire. The "Night Music" section is a study in color and atmosphere and makes striking use of contemporary instrumental techniques including clusters and aleatory. The second section ("Day Music") is a bright and brassy contrast, full of drive and an exhilarating momentum. (Only the first section of A Little Night and Day Music is included on the recording)

A More Perfect Union - Mike Forbes

A More Perfect Union is inspired by the strife of the Boston Tea Party before the American Revolution, as well as other struggles throughout the history of the United States. It is cast in three distinct parts, with the first portraying the early struggle of the colonies to unify, the second part reflecting the unification of our country after a tumultuous civil war and finally, demonstrating the spirit and fight of the current divide in today's political atmosphere. It is a welcome addition to the concert band repertoire with a strong musical message.

A Mystical Legend

Mystical Legend depicts the loup-garou (French: werewolf, sometimes rendered as rougarou in spelling and pronunciation). This swamp wolf man from Cajun folklore is largely used as a children's tale to inspire obedience, though it can be seen as a force for good. This edgy and eerie composition presents the loup-garou as a misunderstood monster or a tragic protagonist.

A New Day

A New Day Breaking

Written as a celebratory fanfare or concert opener, this work for band is an opportunity to explore the excitement of new day breaking and the possibilities it holds. The work is dedicated to a particular director, but also all who welcome the opportunities and challenges of the new day.

A New Horizon - Steve Dunn

A New Horizon was composed for the 2021 University of Mobile High School Honor Band during its most challenging season in memory, and contains dynamic swells, subito changes, and crisp articulations. The title of this joyful, upbeat piece is a reminder that hope remains and we should keep our eyes on the future: a new horizon.

A Walk in the Park

A Walk in the Park for Walter was composed for Avenllaneda's John F. Kennedy High School Band. This composition features dynamic brass, sustained chords, sweeping & energetic woodwind lines, and a recurring 3-note motif, in addition the the intuitive musical phrasing for which Strommen is known. The vibrant fast sections are contrasted by a waltz in the middle of the piece, which is then followed by a wonderfully bold ending.

Abalone Sunset

Abalone Sunset captures a glimpse of evening hours at the beach. Written in such a way as to inspire confidence in intermediate players, optional solo opportunities are marked in several instruments. Within the harmony, there are several instances of tension (dissonance) within the sound canvas, expressing the glow of soft color and changing light as the sun sets over a stunning ocean scene.
