Semper Fidelis

Semper Gratus

Written in honor of the composer's band director, this challenging concert opener or contest selection is designed to develop fundamentals of music, technical aspects of performance and expose students to great band literature. Serenata

Suitable for performance after one year of instruction, this Latin-flavored dance is an excellent study in independent playing for young bands. With steady percussion, bass staccato articulations, clarinet and horn ostinatos, and muted trumpets, there are many teaching moments presented. A contrasting middle section lets your band focus on smooth articulations and alternating melodic lines. Program this for a lighter moment in your concert that also helps students learn important musical concepts.

Sesenta

Sesenta was composed to celebrate the 60 years of leadership by Dr. Guy Foreman with the Michigan City Municipal Band. The piece opens with an exciting and energetic theme, with the tempo staying brisk throughout. The dynamic shifts and rhythmic patterns reflect both the celebratory nature of the anniversary and the progression of time. Solos from soprano saxophone, flute, and euphonium add color to the piece, while the final fanfare-like coda provides a majestic conclusion.

Seven Summits

The Seven Summits are the highest mountains of each of the seven continents. Using the concept of the summits, this piece explores the rush of adrenaline, the pounding of the heart, and the sheer joy of being one with nature. The middle slower section represents the pitfalls and difficulties of climbing the mountains, demonstrated by the several accidentals and mature chordal progressions. Finally, the end brings the climber's triumphant return to base camp! 1st trumpet's highest note is G.

Shadow of the Sphinx

Shadow of the Sphinx transports listeners to ancient Egypt, where the relentless labor of workers who built monuments in the desert was marked by exhaustion and pride. The music evokes the vastness of the desert and the mysterious grandeur of the Great Sphinx. The piece uses light percussion to mimic the movement of camels and slow, deliberate melodies to reflect the weariness of the workers. Attention to precision and balance between the instruments will help recreate the mystical, ancient atmosphere.

Shine Kindly Here

Inspired by Mark Twain's poem "Warm Summer Sun", Shine Kindly Here evokes the beauty of nature as sunlight dances across the water. The piece begins with delicate mallet figures, representing the play of light on the sea, and gradually builds in intensity with shifting rhythms and soaring melodies that reflect the natural beauty of the composer's surroundings. The work culminates in a dramatic conclusion, offering an uplifting experience through its intricate harmonies and flowing lines.

Shockwave

Sidekicks! - Chris Ferguson

Inspired by the playful imagination of a young child named Max, Sidekicks! follows his adventurous world full of heroes, villains, and sidekicks. The piece reflects the unpredictability and joy of childhood through dynamic musical themes, celebrating the role of band directors as both educators and parents. It highlights the creativity children bring and the magic that music and imagination can create together.

Silent Midwinter's Noel

This fantasia on three traditional Christmas carol uses Bleak Midwinter, Silent Night and The First Noel as its foundation. Written in accessible keys to help students achieve excellent intonation, the arrangement also helps players perform with their instrument's characteristic sound. Careful attention to the harmonic cadences will also teach performers about tension and resolution and its place in musical expression.
