Sasha Takes a Train - Kim Portnoy

This large full score (11" x 17") is available for this entry in our Wind Band Select series at normal discount. Sasha Takes a Train, commissioned by the USAF Band of Mid-America, was inspired by a memorable overnight train ride in Eastern Europe taken by the composer's family. The music is intended to evoke the motion and sounds of the train and the noisy, scary, surprising and joyous character of the journey. Sasha refers to the composer's then 13 month old son Alexander who managed to sleep through much of his first train adventure.

Scenes from the Peconic

The natural beauty and historical significance of the Peconic River, a tranquil and majestic waterway originating in the pine barrens of eastern Long Island, are depicted in this colorful, flowing and tuneful new piece by Long Island resident Carl Strommen. The luminous scoring is designed to show the band to its best advantage. The 6/8 meter of most of the piece is ideal for representing the flow of the river's steady progress to the sea.

Bobber in the old Scots language is the word for a dance. The piece is an original composition for developing bands in a Scottish style. It cantains all of the typically Larry Clark compositional techniques that you have come to know and your students have come to love.

Scrimshaw Tales

Scrimshaw is the technique of whalebone and ivory carving that was started by sailors centuries ago. Inspired by the composer's stay in Utqiagvik, Alaska, this composition musically illustrates scenes from these carvings thatdepict a day of Alaskan fishing. Starting broadly and majestically, the music quickly moves to a lively and energetic section that features syncopation and introduces the concept of canonic entrances. A return to the initial thematic material brings the piece to an excitingconclusion. Although challenging in many ways, this composition fully rewards all performers and listeners with a thrilling musical journey.

SEAL Team: The Mission

Capture the danger and tension of a SEAL team mission with this exciting concert opener. Beginning with a pulsating rhythmic figure representing communication between the members before a slower section of longing to be home with family and friends, and a final driving section of determination and bravery, strong melodic themes are developed throughout. Featuring an expanded percussion section, meter and dynamic changes and thrilling moments of suspense and release, program this for success at contest, festival or concert performances.
