The Warrior's Path

Playable by as few as 5 winds and 4 percussion, this beginning band piece depicts a lone warrior beginning a journey across an ancient land. This solitary warrior is joined by others on the way, and together they defend those who cannot defend themselves. Less than two minutes long and using only the first 6 notes of the Bb concert scale, this is a great choice for a second semester concert and for bands with limited instrumentation. The Winter Storm

The storms of winter can be dangerous and beautiful at the same time. This composition starts off fast, dark, and furious. It moves into a lighter side during the middle section before ending as it started. Paying close attention to all articulations and dynamics throughout the piece while maintaining the balance between winds and percussion will develop many essential musical skills. With interesting melodies, subtle dissonance, and multiple percussion parts, this journey through the winter storm will be exciting and memorable.

The Yellow Moon

When the moon appears orange or yellow, it simply means we are seeing it through more layers of the atmosphere. This lyrical composition set in the accessible key of concert B-flat uses multiple musical layers to create a musical impression of the moon's appearance. Gentle percussion and small dissonant moments offer the opportunity to learn rubato phrasing. Some tempo variations help create a mysterious mood and approachable instrumental ranges allow performers to focus on creating emotional moments with a beautiful performance.
