Composed in 1959 by Mongo Santamaria, Afro Blue became one of the earliest jazz standards written in an Afro-Cuban style. This creative setting for concert band utilizes the African bemb rhythm, along with characteristic melodies and harmonies alternating between various sections of the band. We are proud to present this compelling work that won the NBA/Merrill Jones Composition Contest for Young Composers. The composer was still in high school when he wrote this sensitive work of substance for winds and percussion; it displays a keen sense of color and creativity as well as a high level of artistry. The clear and evocative writing is reflective of the composers talent and imagination.

After the Cakewalk - Robert Nathaniel Dett

Despite his having moved to the United States with his family when he was 11 years old, Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was born in Canada where glimpses of his talent had already begun to manifest themselves at an early age. Among Dett's earliest titles was his Characteristic March Two-Step, After the Cakewalk. Perhaps written when Dett was just a teenager, this current edition is wholly based upon its original 1901 band publication that was arranged by Lee Orean Smith. Smith was also responsible for preparing Dett's piano solo version for publication, as well as its form for theatre orchestra and mandolin club. Owing to the fact that Smith's highly idiomatic scoring was prepared for a band of that period, this edition adapts, edits and extends Smith's instrumentation in order to make it possible for Dett's music to become available to a new generation of musicians and listeners alike. After the Darkness... was thoughtfully written to honor and lift up the ten beautiful lives (eight students and two teachers) that were taken by a senseless act of violence in the early morning of May 18, 2018, on the high school campus at Santa Fe, Texas. A heavy work with a lot to learn from and listen to.

Afternoon Games - Eric Ewazen

OLD SETTLERS' PICNIC is a is a four-movement suite for Band by Eric Ewazen, arranged by Virginia Allen; each movement is published separately. Composed with high school performers in mind, the suite was inspired by an 1890s photograph and descriptions of a Wisconsin town's "Old Settlers" celebration. AFTERNOON GAMES are depicted with a Vivace scherzo in 6/8. The running and skipping leads to an extended fugue for a copycat game before returning to the opening theme.
