This beautiful composition was commissioned to provide purpose, direction, and comfort for two individual High School Band programs from the same district during the years 2020 - 2021. Virtual learning was established and weekly meetings took place between conductors, students, and composer to collaborate on how the piece would be created. Later, the finished product was premiered individually by both ensembles and a large contingent of family, friends, and school officials were able to share in the positive experience of hearing the music performed in a live setting. Very emotional!

And Still, the Spirit - Philip Sparke

This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Mhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate. This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.

Reflective, joyous and uplifting are but a few of the words that best describe this highly dramatic work by noted composer James Swearingen. Intended as a tribute, this composition musically celebrates three wonderful high school students whose lives were all tragically taken. Great compositional writing, memorable themes and an emotional middle section based on an old English hymn, all combine to create an outstanding piece that is well-suited for contest and festival use.
