Ascension Of The Emperor - Webb

"Ascension of the Emperor" is a terrific opener for your beginning band's very first concert! Only the first six notes learned in band instruction are used, and because there are no rhythms faster than quarter notes for the winds (and eighth notes for percussion,) this piece bolsters confidence right away, yet challenges them to keep learning. The crowd is sure to sit up and take notice of how much they've grown in just a few short months!

Ascent

Ascent reflects the effort to get off the ground, literally or figuratively. It's a micro-overture that begins with the promise of upward transcendence, yet soon flies off into rogue disorganization. A raucous flock of notes finally converges into a united upward-headed murmuration, but the freedom of soaring through the sky brings an uneasy mystery before settling into the tranquil air of anticipation.

The Ash Grove is designed to give your best trumpet, trombone, baritone or tuba player an opportunity to play a solo with band accompaniment. It should serve as the culmination of study for the soloist at the completion of any method book 1. The piece also has all of the solo material cued in the band so if a soloist is not available you can perform this piece with band alone.

Ash Grove Variations - Stephen Bulla

Based on a Welsh folk song, this simple melody is tastefully scored to fit the familiar style of Holst and Vaughn Williams. After an introduction that builds on fragmentary melodic elements in 4/4 meter, the main theme of the variations appears in 3/4. Scored to feature different instrumental textures throughout, in addition to a full ensemble treatment. Very appropriate for contest.
