This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Mhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate.This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.Duration: 8:15

Reflective, joyous and uplifting are but a few of the words that best describe this highly dramatic work by noted composer James Swearingen. Intended as a tribute, this composition musically celebrates three wonderful high school students whose lives were all tragically taken. Great compositional writing, memorable themes and an emotional middle section based on an old English hymn, all combine to create an outstanding piece that is well-suited for contest and festival use. The third movement begins in the early morning hours of April 18th, 1906. As the city sleeps the fault line rips and the Earth begins to tear apart. Devastation and destruction ensue as the city turns to chaos caused by the tremors and aftershocks of the earthquake. An odd-metered march develops that signifies the soldiers marching in to take control of the city as it burns in the aftermath of the quake.Duration: 9.30

Displaying a variety of colours and musical styles, here is an impressive offering from Ted Ricketts. The calm setting in the beginning gradually gives way to a faster, emotionally-charged section featuring the trumpet section with rhythmic answers from the rest of the ensemble. Also featured is a contrasting section for woodwinds and brief solos for clarinet and flute before returning to the powerful faster strains and exciting ending.Duration: 4.00

This wonderful Christmas medley combines three favorite holiday carols with the word "angel" in their titles and Swearingen's treatment of each is simply divine! They are; Angels From The Realms Of Glory, Angels We have Heard On High and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. Audiences will think this arrangement is heaven sent.
