CATCHER OF SHADOWS (Concert Band - Score only) - Wilby, Philip

Score only. Catcher of Shadows was written in celebration of the work of photographer Frank Meadow Sutcliffe who lived and worked in the Yorkshire fishing port of Whitby at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. His work is largely of the sea, its tall ships and the people that live by and from it. The world which he catalogued is gone into our Romantic heritage, and a true northern nostalgia is one of the strongest flavours of his work. The music has sought to catch the flavour as well as some of the substance of his original work, even though particular photographs are directly connected with particular parts of the music. This main title song is an imaginative adventure for the citizens of Bricksburg. An upbeat and driving melody is interrupted with a melodic statement and concludes with the initial theme. Catena, Latin for chain, is a work of enormous range; passages of power and fire alternating with sections of the utmost tranquillity and lyricism: now pungent, now wistful. The broad outline is a set of twelve variations interspersed with ritornelli and passaggi, framed by a prelude and postlude and with a concluding coda. Duration: 14 mins.

Cathedral Grove (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Buckley, Robert

Cathedral Grove is a magnificent park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, containing some of the oldest and largest trees in the world. It is the towering, majestic pillars of these ancient giants and the quiet serenity of this place that inspired this music. Evocative and impressionistic in nature, Robert Buckley's writing depicts the richness of the colours and textures, and the diffused light shining through the canopy of leaves above. At times hauntingly lyrical, and other times prayer-like and reverent, but always filled with awe and beauty. (Includes optional part for acoustic guitar or harp).Duration: 3:10

Named the 2008 winner of the prestigious Frederick Fennell Prize for young composers (sponsored by ASCAP and CBDNA), Cathedrals by Kathryn Salfelder is a fantasy on Gabrieli's Canzon Primi Toni from the "Sacrae Symphoniae," which dates from 1597. The work is an ingenious synthesis of old and new, evoking the mystery and allure of Renaissance spatial music through the use of two brass choirs, and intertwined with a rich color palette, modal harmonies, and a variety of woodwind and percussion textures. A stunning addition to the wind band repertoire. Duration: 6:00
