    Lux Futura - Kevin Houben

Lux Futura (Light of the Future) was commissioned by the Royal Wind Orchestra Delft and is inspired by the letters 'D-E-L-F-T' using the letter notation system by Bla Bartk. In this 'Delft' cell, there is referral to the 'Trinitas', the bourdon bell of the Old Church in Delft, that only tolls during a funeral of a member of the Dutch Royal Family. The Delft melody switches to the 'Agneta March', which is a reference to the history of the Royal Wind Orchestra Delft. Further on the love theme, played by the bass instruments represents the love of the inhabitants for their city throughout space and time. In the middle movement, the beauty of the city is depicted by the coranglais (English horn) solo, as an ode to the lovely city of Delft. When performed, one can choose to use sound city samples recorded in Delft to create a truly magnificent spectacle. The three samples can be downloaded from websites www.halleonardeurope.com or www.kevinhouben.be.

    All Cried Out

At the beginning of the 1980s Alison Moyet was discovered by Vince Clarke, who - in search of greater independence - had left the successful band Depeche Mode. The soulful singing style of Moyet and the electronic, innovative pop that Clarke made melded well together in the group Yazoo with hits such as Only You and Don't Go. However, after a number of years Moyet went her own way and forged a solo career, during which she demonstrated a somewhat more traditional sound. She recorded several covers (such as The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face and That Ole Devil Called Love) but she also wrotefine songs herself, such as Love Resurrection and, of course, the expressive song AllCried Out. This arrangement by Peter Kleine Schaars does justice to the atmosphere of the original song.

    Celtic Fantasy - Keiichi Kurokawa

"Celtic" is a widely used term. Its history and culture expands to modern day Spain, Portugal, and North America. However, in this piece, I have based my music on the typical "Celtic" areas of Ireland and Scotland. The Bagpipe drone at the beginning reappears several times. After the introduction, the music transitions to an Irish Reel, The Wind That Shakes The Barley. Reel is a fast tempo dance, often in 4/4 or 2/2 time.Next is the Scottish folksong Auld Lang Syne, known as "Hotaru no Hikari" in Japan. The third movement is called Scotland the Brave. It is often performed by military bagpipe ensembles. Once air is blown into the bag, there is a constant reservoir of sound for Great Highland Bagpipes.A Part (advanced) is a grade 2.5-3 in American grading system. B Part (beginner) is 1-1.5.B Part is accessible for elementary school and junior high school beginning band students in Japan. However, the drone-sounding sections require a certain technique to hold the sound steady. It is my sincere desire that beginning musicians understand the importance of fundamentals through performing good music.Keiichi Kurokawa

Credentium - Jan van der Roost

A spectacular dive via an extended chromatic scale immediately submerges us in a charged and somewhat archaic-feeling atmosphere. Trumpets, horns and trombones resound in rhythmic patterns, buttressed by restless motifs in the percussion. A second theme, in the woodwinds, begins much calmer but is quickly pushed aside by that same brass offensive. This introduction is the musical expression of the sometimes tumultuous early history of the town of Peer in Belgium. It closes with a D scale played over two octaves and repeated three times, symbolizing the church steeples that dominate the townscape. Peer has the credentials of a town, and people should know about it.There followsa rhythmic, turbulent passage: in the course of history, Peer has not been spared the ravages of war, arson, occupation, epidemic and other evils. In contrast, a slow, pastoral, lyrical part expresses the periods of peace and prosperity the town has known, as well as the serene geographic setting that still characterizes the place. Various instruments in groups are developed in solo style while the accompaniment displays vast, painterly images of sound. Now and then an exotic intonation is heard: a variety of peoples and cultures have left their mark on the town. This episode of tranquility and peacefulness comes to a sudden end when, via a surprising, almost chaotic transitional passage, we are in effect transported back to our own time. A hopeful, festive march expresses the confidence in the future that the Royal Concert Band of Peer exudes. This confidence is wholly justified: under the direction of conductor Willy Fransen, the 95 members of the concert band have experienced an extended period of good fortune, and the 75 musicians of the youth band - and the 45 little musicians of the mini-band - are involved in thriving operations.

    Folksong Suite - Antal Farkas

This reworked edition of the Folksong Suite by Antal Farkas will help to widen the repertoire of youth ensembles and adult amateur orchestras. The composer's son, Tams Farkas has supplemented the score of the work, adding symphonic wind ensemble parts, and has in a number of places reworked it slightly in accordance with present-day requirements. 'I recommend this work to any orchestra active anywhere in the world. The piece provides an enjoyable experience, helps in correcting faulty intonation, in interpreting various musical styles, in fostering a homogeneous sound, in developing technique and ensemble playing, and it is certain of a favourable response from audiences. I hope every musician will find pleasure in it!' (Jzsef Csikota, president of the East European section of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles.)

    New Dawn - Roland Barrett

This powerful new work by Roland Barrett chronicles the story of the Enola Gay, the aircraft whose name will forever be etched in history as the deliverer of the world's first atomic bomb. Using a massive battery of percussion, New Dawn features easy but effective special sound effects and inventive percussion writing. There are plenty of moments of tension and impact that alternate with passages of serenity and contemplation. An emotional and energetic work that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Space Lab - Giuseppe Ratti

A long pedal-note of evanescent chords, based on empty parallel fifths, announces the theme;flutes and reed instruments exploit some almost imperceptible micro-fragments, supported by muted trumpets, creating what is an almost surreal and spatial atmosphere. This was Giuseppe Ratti's starting point for his "Space Lab", a laboratory of sounds and, later (when the main theme is taken up once more), of rhythms. Although it may sound complicated, this piece is ultimately based on a single motif: the descending fourth played on the second beat by the woodwinds. In this piece, Giuseppe Ratti, with his usual pallet of clear, transparent colours at hand, appropriate for the general public, together with simple, effective themes, has sought to experiment with new atmospheres and rhythms. First of all we hear the entire theme in the Allegro. Then the rhythm changes in a simple but at the same time complex manner: almost a genetic mutation. The part leading up to the final Lento flows smoothly for the listener but requires great skill and experience on the part of those performing it. In the final lento the main theme reappears in all its simplicity and sincerity, purified of all contrasts. A metaphor for a life that leads us towards unimaginable frontiers but which, in the end, always brings us back to the point from where we started.

    Austrian Overture - Thomas Doss

Austria is an industrious country. During the last century--which was characterized by extreme changes--the hard-working and ambitious people achieved a great deal, enduring two world wars and numerous political skirmishes. Despite all the problems involved in a change from a dual monarchy to a small state, Austria has found its independence. With his Austrian Overture, Thomas Doss looks toward the future. The first part of the composition provides an optimistic outlook; along with the happiness and energy, some musical humor is also present: while the horns powerfully express joy, small yodeling melodies sound throughout. As the rhythm continues insearch of new ways to go, catchy tunes compete to be heard. However, in addition to the energetic, diligent Austria, there's also the quiet landscape where one can enjoy repose and beauty. These aspects - as well as the freedom of spirit and cultural life -are conveyed in the second part of the work through the surprising linking of chords, romantic phrasing, and tender melodies. But life never stands still: creativity, ambition, and work are the driving forces of our existence. Embracing this thought, a reprise of the first part provides a compelling ending.

The arrival of the Europeans markedtheir decline and endangered their existence. The many secrets the Aborigines hold served as inspiration for this work. Maintaining the delicate balance between their trinity - nature, man, and creation - is an important factor for bliss and happiness.Primeval Sound and Dreamtime The tens of thousands-year-old stories from the era calledDreamtime - the Aborigines' creation myth - play an important role in not only their beliefs, but their everyday lives and laws as well. Hunting weapons, such as the boomerang, exemplify their abilities.Uluru (Red Rock)Uluru, also knownas Ayers Rock, is a natural sandstone "inselberg" rising 348m above Australia's plains, and is one of the country's most recognisable icons. Uluru is also a sacred place for the local Aborigines. Its history stretches back to Dreamtime, although itdid not exist in its current state at that time.Encounter with the White MenUnfortunately, the "White Men" did not realize the significance and importance of the Aborigines and their culture until the end of the 20th century. Before then, theywere unaware that the Aborigines were quite possibly one of the oldest known cultures on earth, with a seamless history stretching back to creation itself; Dreamtime. BushfireFire has been present on the Australian continent for millions ofyears. Many of the indigenous flora and fauna have needed to adapt to fire, and evolution has led to unique solutions for survival. Over time, a complex symbiotic relationship has grown between life and the continually returning bushfire.

Condacum - Jan van der Roost

Condacum' was composed on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Arts Council in the Belgian district of Kontich, the home town of the composer Jan Van der Roost. It is an interesting composition in which the history of this Belgian community is depicted in sound. The opening reminds one of the advance of the Roman army, whilst the dynamic development is full of vitaliy!
