Istvn (part 3 from 'Sinfonia Hungarica') - Jan Van der Roost
Sinfonia Hungarica is a three-movement symphony that depicts the history of Hungary. All three movements were inspired by historical key figures, wars, and other important events from this country. This symphony is a celebration of Hungary's millennium in 2001.The final movement is named after ISTVAN, the King who introduced Christianity into Hungary and who was crowned by Pope Silvestro II on January 1, 1001. A rather solemn start leads to another war-like passage, ending with some loud crashes. This symbolizes the fact that the body of the pagan Koppany was cut into four pieces, and sent to the four castles of the country as an example. After a quiet, almost religiousintermezzo, the National Hymn of Hungary is introduced. This broad "grandioso" ending also has a symbolic meaning: after ten centuries, Hungary has many reasons to look back on the past with pride, and to look forward to the future with optimism and confidence.

Excelsior - Rob Goorhuis
Excelsior was composed by Rob Goorhuis in the year 2000 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary in 2001 of the Amsterdam-based concert-band Jong Excelsior. Excelsior is a one-movement fantasia, consisting of contrasting themes. The first theme (the Excelsior theme) is characterized by angular figures moving in an upward direction. The second theme is playful and humorous in nature. Rob Goorhuis, who was born and bred in Amsterdan, may even have utilized memories of his own juvenile pranks in this second theme. The third theme, which is introduced by the cor anglais is melancholy and melodious. The elements mentioned above interchange in a thoroughlycaptivating manner, which ultimately results in an attractive composition fully capable of adding lustre to an anniversary.

Colditz Castle - Rob Goorhuis
Written as a commission by the Stichting de Inrichting foundation of Wijk bij Duurstede (the Netherlands), Rob Goorhuis Requiem voor de mens (Requiem for Man) on lyrics by Andr van Zwieten was composed in the year 2001. This work for choir andwind-band greatly impressed the audience, whilst its composer remained obsessed by its war theme. When he subsequently heard that the Rundfunk Blasorchester from the German town of Leipzig -a place not far from Colditz - was to dedicate a CDto his work, Rob Goorhuis got the idea to process some of the themes from his Requiem for Man into an instrumental composition about the famous Colditz castle. a place still bearing the scars of war. From 1933 to 1934, the castle was aSchutzhaftlager. During the Second World War, it was used as a prison for senior officers. From this prison, many escapes were undertaken, which even resulted in the castle being nicknamed The Escape School. In the seventies, a television-seriesabout this period made the castle very well-known with the public at large. The despondent tone of the opening theme underscores the sadness caused by wars and violence. Nevertheless the works ending is hopeful and triumphant. Peace iscelebrated, but with the hope for a lasting peace sadly remaining a topical issue to the present moment.
