A Little Klezmer Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
A Little Klezmer Suite was commissioned by Rushton Park High School to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their band programme. They gave the premiere in a virtual online concert in October 2020. Klezmer music originated in the shtetl (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as klezmorim, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Klezmer is a Yiddish term combining the Hebrew words kley (instrument) and zemer (song). The roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish hazanut (cantorial music) and also the nigunim, the wordless melodies intoned by the Hasidim (orthodox Jews). The melodies used in the four movements of A Little Klezmer Suite have traditionally been used in Jewish wedding ceremonies and celebrations. Duration: 7.45

Eternal Friendship (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Yagisawa, Satoshi
This work is a close-up of the encounters and relationships of trust between people, following the idea that friendship lasts forever. After the passing of Satoshi Yagisawa's close friend and work partner, Tsutomu Murata, a designer of Neo Create in August 2020, the composer began work on this piece. Murata performed music for audiences primarily as a leader and conductor of Kurume City Brass, a group which is active in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan. Eternal Frienship depicts a five-minute chorale which explores how music can convey that a close friend is indispensable to you, more broadly, everyone to someone, much like how Murata conveyed the appeal of music to his audiences. Under the direction of the composer himself, the work had its world premiere and was recorded with the Kobe College Wind Orchestra. Duration: 5.30

We Will Remember Them (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wagner, Douglas E.
The worldwide pandemic of 2020 left in its wake devastating numbers of lives lost, resulting in unspeakable suffering for families coping with the grief for their now absent loved ones. This is especially true for the first responders, frontline personnel, doctors, nurses, scientists, medical support teams, and healthcare staff members whose selfless dedication and devotion to caring for others tragically resulted in their own passing. Guided by their personal, deep sense of duty and obligation to heal and help, they put themselves in harm's way, paying the ultimate price so that others might live. Celebrate their lives with Douglas Wagner's composition, We Will Remember Them. May their bright stars ever spread the night sky, piercing the darkness to continue bringing light, hope, and inspiration to us all. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. Duration: 3.15

Rotterdam 1945 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan
Rotterdam 1945 was written at the request of Maestro Arjan Tien, the chief conductor of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy, to commemorate their 75th anniversary in 2020. 1945 also marked the end of World War II, the year that my home country Holland was liberated from Nazi Germany. My father was born in Rotterdam in 1910, so I have a special bond with this dynamic city. I have used the numbers 1-9-4-5 to create the main theme and translated it into a four-note motif: C - D'- F - G. - Johan de Meij. Duration: 7.30

Labyrinth for Symphonic Band (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Aagaard-Nilsen, Torstein
I wrote Labyrinth to celebrate the 450th anniversary for the city of Fredrikstad. The Danish king Fredrik II agreed to establish a new town further down the river Glomma, to make it easier to defend from the Swedes. The piece is a network of quotations mixed with my own pitch material. My versions of the quoted melodies are not authentic, and sometimes hard to recognize. However, the different quotations give the music an aura of tonality. For example, a dance tune composed by the Flemish composer Mattheus Le Maistre (1505-1577). The melody also occurs in the first danish book of hymns written after the reformation. Since Norway for 400 years was a part of Denmark and everybody had to write and read Danish, they used much of the same music, too. I also use regular Danish hymn tunes and quote from a religious folk song from the area around Fredrikstad. The military signals I use are authentic (for example, The Old Danish March), and I am very sure they were used in the Old Town (the fortress) of Fredrikstad. The drums quote from The Downfall of Paris. This could have been heard played by professional soldiers hired by the Swedes from Scotland. This edition is a revised version made in 2020. - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen. Duration: 23.00
