Three-Eight Charlie (The Incredible Adventure of Jerrie Mocke) (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Jeanbourquin, Marc
In 1964, the American aviator Jerrie Mocke was the first woman to fly solo around the world, in spite of her critics and the bad weather forecasted. She completed this journey in 29 days on board the "Spirit of Columbus", a single engine Cessna. This story inspired Marc Jeanbourquin. The aviator's determined nature appears from the very first bars, reflecting her mood before take-off. The hymn that follows illustrates the beginning of the flight, when all is going well. This leads to a calmer section, as if the aviator was letting herself be carried by the air currents above the clouds, lost in her thoughts. Then a more energetic passage brings her back inside the cockpit to confront the bad weather she encounters. She overcomes these difficulties to appear out of the clouds before a cheerful finale, as if nearing the finishing line. Welcome aboard for a flight around the world! First prize in the composition competition of the Swiss Music Association (Contest music 4th category 2020). Duration: 6.00

La Chica Sin Nombre (Trombone Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A vibrant, rhythmic solo for trombone and band. La Chica sin Nombre was written in March 2020 at the request of Brett Baker. He wanted something in Latin style so I chose to go for a Mambo-type dance piece. This obviously works best with band accompaniment where I would always ask for Conga drums and Mambo Bell/Timbales rather than drum kit. The piece needs to be played with an appropriate feel for Latin music. It should sound light and easy to play but has a few tricky moments! Duration: 4.15

Hope Springs Eternal (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A concert overture with interest and colour for the whole band, Hope Springs Eternal was written during the seemingly interminable lockdowns of 2020. The intention was to compose some positive music as an encouragement during difficult times. It starts with a strident statement before turning fairly shortly to a more reflective response from the woodwind. The opening returns and this time the response is broader before it builds to a peak and unleashes the faster music that follows. Several melodic fragments are introduced before a minor key theme is established. The music becomes lighter as it progresses until it reaches the cheerful and melodic trio section. The minor section makes a brief return before being forever banished by the final statement of the affirmative opening music.Duration: 6.45

Do you Recall? (Trombone Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A slow, bluesy solo for trombone with wind band accompaniment. Like many people, I took the opportunity offered by the COVID lockdown in the Spring of 2020 to sort through old paperwork. I discovered a lot of songs that had not seen the light of day for many years and were mostly written with just the melody and chord symbols. Some offered the potential of becoming instrumental solos with a combination of heart-on-the-sleeve melodies the like of which I would not write now, together with maybe a greater sophistication in the instrumental writing. I had the notion in the back of my mind that 'Do you recall?' would work as a trombone solo but it seemed to fight me all the way. However, once finished it has proved to appeal to trombonists and has already been recorded by Brett Baker. It is not intrinsically difficult but needs a sense of the appropriate slow swing style and good control throughout the range. - Rob Wiffin. Duration: 4.15

Symphony No.5, Finale from (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Beethoven, Ludwig van - Longfield, Robert
The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. While the first movement of his famous fifth symphony is more often performed, the majestic and triumphant finale beautifully exemplifies the craftsmanship and genius of one of the greatest composers of all time. This masterful adaptation for concert band is based on the recapitulation and coda of the final movement and includes the signature Beethoven ending completely intact! Duration: 5.00

Rotterdam 1945 - Johan de Meij
Rotterdam 1945 was written at the request of Maestro Arjan Tien, the chief conductor of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy, to commemorate their 75th anniversary in 2020. 1945 also marked the end of World War II, the year that my home country Holland was liberated from Nazi Germany. My father was born in Rotterdam in 1910, so I have a special bond with this dynamic city. I have used the numbers 1-9-4-5 to create the main theme and translated it into a four-note motif: C - D'- F - G.

Eternal Friendship - Satoshi Yagisawa
This work is a close-up of the encounters and relationships of trust between people, following the idea that "friendship lasts forever." After the passing of Satoshi Yagisawa's close friend and work partner, Tsutomu Murata, a designer of Neo Create in August 2020, the composer began work on this piece. Murata performed music for audiences primarily as a leader and conductor of Kurume City Brass, a group which is active in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan. Eternal Frienship depicts a five-minute chorale which explores "how music can convey that a close friend is indispensable to you, more broadly, everyone to someone," much like how Murata conveyed the appeal of music to his audiences. Under the direction of the composer himself, the work had its world premiere and was recorded with the Kobe College Wind Orchestra.

Fields of Deliberation - Kevin Houben
Fields of Deliberation was written by composer Kevin Houben for the 'Limburgs Fanfare Orkest'. The occasion was the concert cycle that appropriately commemorated the end of the Second World War (in 2020, 75 years ago). From the very first beginning till the end, speed, energy and 'drive' characterize this powerful composition. A magnificent lyrical melody is the common thread throughout the piece, without the rapid movement losing pace or intensity. Majestic, grand moments and energetic passages alternate culminating in an impressive highlight. This dynamic concert piece with a cinematic character is a challenge for all the different groups of instruments of the orchestra and is an added value for any concert program.
