Panopticon Rising - Ralph Ford
The title implies "all watching," hinting to the mythological Greek Watchman Panoptes and "opticon" for watching. This original contemporary composition opens with an unassuming docile theme. The transparency is rapidly replaced with driving tutti components that furiously depict a vividly punctuated theme. Reminiscent passive melodies interrupt occasionally, building to an uncompromising conclusion. With a vivid percussion contribution, this energy-packed composition is unparalleled. Bravo! (5:30)

Rubies (After Thelonious Monk's Ruby, My Dear) - John Harbison
Composer John Harbison writes: 'Rubies is a version of Thelonious Monk's 'Ruby, My Dear', which he composed while still in his teens. When I was invited by the Seattle Symphony to make a short piecereflecting my first musical passions, my thoughts were of Bach and Monk. Since I had recently made some Bach-like chorale preludes, I chose to make a version of Monk's tune, first in a chamber-musical, contrapuntal manner, then inthe grand orchestral style I had always heard lurking there.' Ancient Desert Drone - Henry Cowell
Ancient Desert Drone was composed for Orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger, who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch drone throughout the work (similar to Grainger's own The ImmovableDo) and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms, Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent. Particles - Michael Sweeney
This unusual work portrays the transformation of matter from solid to liquid and ultimately to gas. You'll hear a single musical theme transformed throughout, starting with a very rigid and dense opening statement. From there thetheme is treated in a lyrical style (liquid), and finally the pace becomes frantic and energetic as the melodic particles transform into gas. Using unique scoring techniques (including a few aleatoric sections and dramaticpercussion effects) this descriptive work will stir the imagination of players and audience alike. Dur: 5:30
