Veni Immanuel (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Mediation on O Come, O Come ImmanuelThe Advent hymn we all know today as O Come, O Come, Immanuel was arranged in its modern form by Thomas Helmore and published in Hymnal Noted in 1856. Both the words and melody, however, predate this version by centuries. The tune, Veni Immanuel, is taken from a 15th century processional of French Franciscan nuns, part of the setting for the funeral hymn Libera Me. This arrangement aims to expand on the power and mystery of the original tune and will be most effective if the solo trumpet at the start and end of the piece can be placed away from the band, maybe at the back of the auditorium.Duration: 5:30

    London Bridge

London Bridge was originally written for brass quintet and later scored for concert band. Below is the composer recalling the quintet version's premiere. London Bridge was designed to appeal to children, but also to the child remaining in the rest of us. It kind of developed asit went along and ended up where it is today if that makes any sense at all. A few days after the first draft was finished I took it to a clinic for high school band members at one of theAnchorage schools. The clinic was put on by the Canadian Brass who were in Anchorage on a concert tour. They sight read it at the clinic. I even asked them to autograph the parts. They did. I did not have the nerve to ask them what they thought about it, and they offered meno opinion. That may have been good. This is a terrific novelty piece that shows off the whole band, quotes famous pieces and allows the students to really have fun.

The Emerald Shores - Dean Jones

The familiar sounds of Celtic music are steeped in history and have crossed the globe with great popularity. This particular piece uses 3 tunes from Ireland:When Johnny comes marching homeI'll tell me ma (The belle of Belfast city)Morrison's Jig People are featured heavily in Irish Folk music and each song has a personal element within its lyrics. The tunes are memorable and have a strong sense of character, much like the Irish people themselves! Although the music starts slowly, the pace then gathers and the performance will need to convey lots of energy and above all, joy!

The Willow Tree - Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin

Although this haunting tune has the flavor and sentiment of a traditional Irish folk song, it was composed in 1995 by multifaceted artist Pdraign N Uallachin. Her inspiration for the song was the idea that when we are happy or sad, the elements and the natural world are aligned with our feelings. From the wistful lyrics of the song; Down by the river there's a tall willow tree, who weeps all night for you and me. This evocative setting for band follows this sentiment through peaks and valleys of sound and emotion. Dur: 3:10
