Concerto for Wind Ensemble - Karel Husa

Commissioned by the Michigan State University Alumni Band, this three movement work by Karel Husa was the winner of the first Louis Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1983. A note from thecomposer: 'Divided into three movements, this work is a display of virtuoso passages given to solo instruments as well as to the groups of the ensemble. In the Fanfare of the first movement, the Brass section concertises in groupsof four Brass quintets (2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba or Baritone), spread from left to right in back. The Saxophones (SATB) are placed in front of the Brass quintets, and the Woodwinds occupy the front of the stage, withPercussion on the left and right side. These groups, like the Brass quintets, play in the concertante style, particularly in the first and last movements. 'At the same time, each movement contains individual solo passages(for example, Timpani and Flute in Movement I - Drum Ceremony and English Horn and other low Woodwinds in Movement II - Elegy). The composition of this piece was prompted by the excellence of Wind and Percussion players today, andby the incredible growth of Wind ensembles, orchestras, and bands in the last 25 years. It is intended for their enjoyment.'

A Christmas Intrada - Alfred Reed

The celebration of the Nativity has called forth countless songs, dances, carols , plays and combinations of these, involving both vocal and instrumental forces, throughout the centuries, intertwining the feeling of radiant joy and infinite tenderness in many different ways. A CHRISTMAS INTRA DA represents an attempt to portray, in musical terms alone, five contrasting moods associated with the festivities of the Christmas season. These five sections are played without pause. They are: FANFARE: CHRISTUS NATUS EST for brass, chimes, bells and percussion only; LULLABY FOR THE CHRIST CHILD played by the woodwinds; PROCESSIONAL OF THE KINGS AND SHEPHERDS played by the full group; CAROL FOR THE HOLY NIGHT for woodwinds, saxophones and muted brass; and, finally, WASSAIL AND ALLELUIA beginning with the bells and chimes alone, and gradually growing to include not only the full group, but also antiphonal brass choirs, to bring the entire work to a joyous and triumphant conclusion. A CHRISTMAS INTRADA was commissioned by the Middle Tennessee State University Band and dedicated to the bands who annually participate in the Contest of Champions, on the occasion of its 20th Anniversary (1981).The first performance took place on that occasion, at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, October 23rd, 1981, with the U.S. Marine Band, plus antiphonal brass choirs. Grand Chorus and Dialogue - Eugene Gigout / arr. David Marlatt

This dramatic organ work has been superbly arranged by David David Marlatt for concert band with an antiphonal brass choir. There is a call and response between the brass group (2 trumpets and 3 trombones) located at the back of a concert hall, and the band. This a powerful piece that could make a great opener or a work in the middle of a concert. With the antiphonal brass and those big chords, the audience will marvel at the sound of the ensemble.

Fantasy For Winds - Lorenzo Pusceddu

The piece opens with a sumptuous celebratory fanfare dominated by the brass section. In the following Allegro, the woodwind instruments weave their graceful melodious plots, with occasional intense interruptions by the brass section. The piece continues with Valzers where the initial melancholic mood set by the woodwind is superseded by the brass section harkening back to modal musical mode before, once more, being taken up by the woodwind instruments. The piece closes with a gently expressive Andante. The gentle delicacy of this section moves to a moderate Allegro featuring a running dance with light-hearted irregular rhythm. The return to the opening fanfare brings us back to the anniversary celebrations of the Band and a solemn final sequence to the composition. The debut performance took place under the direction of the composer at the Gala Concert on March 28, 2009.

    Cerimonial Ouverture - Lorenzo Pusceddu

This work is characterised by the strong presence of the brass section. Already in the introduction, a sombre pedal is followed by a dialogue between the trumpets and horns that augments as we are conducted to the luminous entrance of the entire band. The brass section, with the vital support of the percussion instruments, also dominates the subsequent movement. The central part is in decided contrast to the rest of the work;the woodwind section becomes the key protagonist of the scene, with sweet melodies and delicate, harmonious embellishments. The initial atmosphere then returns, with the former hierarchy re-established and the unequivocal finale features a powerful cord played by the brass section alone.

Suite from Mass - Leonard Bernstein

Bernstein's Mass was a monumental 90-minute work written for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in 1971. In this suite commissioned by the Canadian Brass and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, arranger Michael Sweeney focuses on a select number of movements, often using the brass quintet to represent the vocal lines found in the original. The striking and beautiful work includes Alleluia, Sanctus, the well-known A Simple Song, Agnus Dei, Offertory and Almighty Father. Although scored for brass quintet and wind ensemble, ample cues are provided to allow this to be performed by a wind ensemble or symphonic band alone. Dur: c.14:00 (Grade 5)

    Viking Saga - Ray Farr

"Viking Saga" was inspired by my conducting engagements in Norway in the 1980s. Among them was a visit to the Flekkefjord Pike Korps who asked me to write a piece for them. I had just written "Adventures in Brass" which was very popular, particularly with younger bands, so I decided to pursue the creative energy. My teacher, at that time, was Professor Edward Gregson who encouraged me to develop my ideas into a full-scale work. The piece received a few performances in this version but neither I, nor my teacher, were satisfied so the manuscripts lay dormant. In the summer of 2002 a band from Switzerland- Cordula Brass Baden and Christoph Moor, who had played the piece under mydirection in the Swiss National Youth Band, commissioned me to finish the work and make the changes that, I felt, were needed. In 2016 the Tnsberg Wind Band, from Norway, commissioned a wind band version for their performance in the Norwegian Championships held in Trondheim 2017.
