Delmar Festival Overture is a powerful concert overture utilizing many of the contemporary compositional techniques that distinguish John O'Reilly's work. From the opening brass fanfare to the exciting conclusion, syncopated rhythms and numerous, interesting shifts of meter abound. Biting polychords establish the predominant harmonic structure for the opening "Allegro," but the majestic theme that follows in the horns and saxes takes on a decidedly British band style. The lyrical middle section begins with a fully scored chorale, which serves as the subject for a lovely melodic development featuring woodwinds and French horn. A brilliant brass fanfare ushers in a return to the opening section, which is now reorganized and further developed to bring this exciting overture to its dramatic conclusion. London Bridge was originally written for brass quintet and later scored for concert band. Below is the composer recalling the quintet version's premiere. London Bridge was designed to appeal to children, but also to the child remaining in the rest of us. It kind of developed asit went along and ended up where it is today if that makes any sense at all. A few days after the first draft was finished I took it to a clinic for high school band members at one of theAnchorage schools. The clinic was put on by the Canadian Brass who were in Anchorage on a concert tour. They sight read it at the clinic. I even asked them to autograph the parts. They did. I did not have the nerve to ask them what they thought about it, and they offered meno opinion. That may have been good. This is a terrific novelty piece that shows off the whole band, quotes famous pieces and allows the students to really have fun.

The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force thwarted Hitler's ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK.The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear the signal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron's Merlin engines bursting into life before theyline up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs to intercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.
