Harrison's Dream - Peter Graham
"Harrison's Dream" is a musical depiction of the forty-year effort by John Harrison during the first half of the 18th century to develop a chronometer capable of providing exact time on the high seas. His obsession was a result of the passing of the Longitude Act following the accidental destruction of the Association, the flagship of the British Royal Navy, along with three sister ships in 1707 on rocks off the Scilly Islands. This highly rhythmic and technical composition was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band, Col. Lowell Graham, Commander/Conductor, and has been awarded the 2002 ABA/Ostwald Award for Original Composition. Graham is Associate Conductor of England's Black Dyke Brass Band. Recorded by the United States Air Force Band and the North Texas Wind Ensemble (Klavier).

Wings - Vince Gassi
The men and women of the Royal Canadian Air Force are the inspiration behind this original composition by Vince Gassi. The first work in his , it takes off with a bright, spirited theme first heard in the flutes. The rest of the ensemble soon joins in the maneuvers and offers a fuller tactical report. Clarinets take over with dignity, providing a lyrical contrast, and are supported by a stately accompaniment. It isn't long before we start to feel the "spirit of adventure" building to a contrasting section conveying images of stealth and intrigue. Covert operations lead finally to a restatement of the opening theme by the brass with flute and clarinet obligato. Interlace with fragments from the covert section and we are carried to a soaring conclusion. If you are looking for a spirited concert opener or closer, look no further! Sandstone and Marble - Adam B. Levowitz
This brilliant trumpet showpiece was written for SGM Chuck Seipp of The United States Army "Pershing's Own." The fast scalar passages and extensive double tonguing show off the players' technique, and this is contrasted by lyrical lines and smooth slurring throughout the range of the instrument. The band parts are rhythmically interesting with some great colorful parts to play as well. Lyrical woodwind solos and powerful brass writing, combined with the flashy solo part, make this work enjoyable by both players and audiences. With the composer conducting, the world premiere was performed on the steps of the US Capitol in Washington, DC (made of sandstone and marble), overlooking the Washington Monument and the reflecting pool.

Something Modal - Ryan Meeboer
provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. Something Modal is a laid back jump swing chart. The melodies and backgrounds are very simple yet catchy. Every section gets an opportunity to play something interesting and fun, but also contribute to the overall feel of the piece. Chord changes are easy enough to open up opportunities for players to practice and show off their improvising abilities. (2:30)

Tidings of Comfort and Joy
This arrangement of starts off in a moderate 4/4 tempo featuring a solo trumpet on the opening melody. The orchestration progressively thickens and then the piece moves into a lively 3/4 tempo, where the low brass and woodwinds are featured under an ostinato in the upper voices. Very reasonable in both rhythm and register, this is a great addition to any holiday concert. (2:10)
