Russian Christmas Music - Alfred Reed
The theme carefully explored by Alfred Reed in this repertoire standard is "Carol of the Little Russian Children" which is an ancient Russian Christmas carol. You can hear four distinct sections originally called "Children's Carol," "Antiphonal Chant," "Village Song" and "Cathedral Chorus" all joined in this continuous contemporary setting. The almost overwhelming sound picture with varied tone colors and brilliant brass choir sounds is a classic in every sense. "Russian Christmas Music" by Alfred Reed is a worthy addition to the Belwin Classic Band series. This recording compliments of the United States Air Force Band, Col. Lowell Graham, conductor.

The Ringmaster - Jon Bubbett
, by Jon Bubbett, is a spirited, fun-loving march written in the circus style of those composed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Its happy and carefree energy brings back memories of three-ring circuses, trapeze artists, and clowns. As the Master of Ceremonies, the ringmaster was decked out in a bright red tailcoat trimmed in gold and a black top hat. Their job was to direct the audience's attention to the various rings where the acts took place, sometimes interact with the clowns, and build excitement for the next act. reminds us of the frenetic energy of the circus, meant for "ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages!" Santa's Journey - Roy W. Kaighin
As Santa starts his journey, bringing "Joy to the World" by delivering presents to children and adults, he sets off on his majestic sleigh driven by his reindeer. A few elves have snuck into the sleigh to help. With a whoosh, he flies across the sky and over the snowy mountains. The music is in continuous motion, just like Santa's sleigh, as he has many presents to deliver before morning. The quiet moments in the music depict Santa's arrival in small villages, away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, touching the hearts of people everywhere. During his journey, Santa discovers the elves who have apparently lost some of the presents. Santa offers a gentle reprimand before the presents are eventually found by Elfie, the youngest Elf. After all the presents have been delivered, Santa heads back home as he calls out, "I'll be back next Christmas!" (4:15)

The Declaration of Arbroath - Andrew Duncan
Programme notes from the composer, Andrew Duncan:Originally written for The West Lothian Schools' Annual Concert 2006 and scored for Concert Band, Brass Band, Highland Bagpipes, Children's Choir and Narrator. This version has been rescored for Concert Band with optional parts for Highland Bagpipes and Narrator. The piece celebrates the internationally renowned Declaration of Arbroath. The music begins in the uncertain times of Scotland's early 14th century, following the Battle of Banockburn and the death of William Wallace. The narrator describes this scene and explains the origins of the Declaration. The music builds to a climax, but once again gives way to uncertainty, allowing the narrator to explain further the history surrounding the Declaration. A group of Scottish Nobles wrote the Declaration which was an appeal to the Pope to recognize Scotland's independence. The piece then reflects a positive outcome following the Pope's support of the Declaration. Further information is provided by the narrator which draws to a rousing build to express the emotive inspiration behind this composition. The original scoring (to include Concert Band, Brass Band, Highland Bagpipes, Choir and Narrator) is also available by request.

Masque - Kenneth Hesketh
A Masque (short for Masquerade) has been defined by Historians as 'A revel in which Mummers or masked folk come with torches blazing into the festive hall and call upon the company to dance and dice' . The chaos of this dramatic dance is depicted in this 'Masque' by Hesketh. The main theme is bravura and is often present, in the background. The form of the piece is a simple scherzo-trio-scherzo. Colourful scoring (upper wind solos, trumpet and horn solos alternating with full bodied tuttis) with a dash of wildness may tease both player and listener to let their hair down a little!Masque has been transcribed for wind band by Kenneth Hesketh from his 'Scherzo for Orchestra', commissioned by the National Children's Orchestra in 1987.
