African Dances - Kit Turnbull
African Dances is a continuous work for solo clarinet and wind ensemble consisting of five individual sections. The basis for the piece is the clarinet's construction from the wood of the African blackwood tree, and its subsequent development into the instrument we know today. Each movement draws on different aspects of Pan-African music, ranging from the styles and forms of the African choral tradition, through to the complex cross-rhythms and patterns that characterise so much of the music of Africa.

Temperamental (Concert Band) Fendall Hill
This work by Fendall Hill was the set test for the 2021 National Brass Band Championships of New Zealand, B Grade. Here it has been adapted for Concert Band. The composer writes: 'J.S. Bach (1685-1750) is deemed by many to be the 'Ulimate Composer'. He added an incredible proportion to the DNA of western music, and his influence is heard in the music of today. Like many artists, he was not overly recognised as a composer during his lifetime, and it took an 1829 performance of the St Matthew Passion by Mendelssohn to ignite a recognition of his place in the music world, a place he has maintained ever since. This piece starts with a similar spark of rediscovery of the music of Bach. It contains arrangements of various works, interspersed with composition based on Bach's chord structures, sections in the style of Bach, and original sections inspired by the moods created along the way. The first section explores the Toccata, and great organ works. This leads into an exploration of his choral works, and a finale based on the Preludes. The word 'Tempered' has different meanings, and all seem to apply to the music of Bach, and these appeal to the musical, engineering and spiritual aspects of my personal life. His music reaches to the humanity and divinity, it has strength, structure and order that creates frameworks in which incredible complexity reigns; and the complexity leads to a wildness, a kind of craziness that represents a range of human moods, and can change without warning. The same piece of music affects people in very different ways. I don't know if it's Bach's music, or us, but it can seem out of control and under control at the same time - the combination is highly temperamental. Ngoma Za Kenya - Paul Basler
"Kwaheri," the third movement of Ngoma za Kenya, contains similar gestures to the previously released first movement, "Jambo" (2008), but is harmonically more progressive. Stylistic influences in the work come from the composer's experiences with Kenyan choral traditions (call and response) and the joyful, optimistic, and celebratory nature of Kenyan culture.

Conducting the Music, Not the Musicians
Conducting the Music, Not the Musicians is the first conductor training text to put the primary emphasis on musical expression as it introduces basic technique through the concept of phrase conducting. Among many unique features it examines cueing within the beat pattern in greater detail than is usual in beginning conducting texts. The examples and exercises (drawn from both the vocal/choral and instrumental repertoires), progress to guided practice chorales and etudes and finally to full score rehearsal and guided performance. Jerry and Henry Nowak have produced a groundbreaking book that will help novice conductors solve technical problems, with musical solutions.

The old Fortress of Luxembourg - Georges Sadeler
"The Old Fortress of Luxembourg" is a commissioned work by the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture for the overture of the official ceremony of Luxembourg's National Day. The piece is less concerned with history, but rather draws inspiration from the architecture of the ancient fortress of Luxembourg, known as Lucilinburhuc."The fortress, over 1000 years old and also referred to as the "Gibraltar of the North," primarily consists today of the Bock Rock, the crypt, the casemates (an underground defense system consisting of kilometers of tunnels), and the Holy Spirit Citadel. These elements are portrayed through radiant fanfare sounds, rhythmic orchestral movements, patriotic choral melodies, and at times, somber musical depictions. As an optional highlight, a choir, supported by a boys' choir, interprets the newly composed text of the third verse of the Luxembourgish National Anthem, adding an additional touch of patriotic grandeur to this piece.

Interlude - Wilhem Stenhammar
Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) was a Swedish pianist, conductor and composer. His compositions include incidental music, operas, concerts, two symphonies and choral works. Initially influenced above all by Wagner and Bruckner, Stenhammar increasingly welcomed in his music a Nordic colour as well as melodic and rhythmic characters typical of Swedish folklore. Completed in 1921, the cantata Sngen (The Song) was Stenhammar's last major work, and its combination of harmonic richness and contrapuntal dexterity ensured it a warm reception. The Interlude connecting the two halves of the work is the only part frequently performed today. It begins by creating a serious and intimate atmosphere, then the music gradually unfolds in increasingly powerful sonorities. Towards the middle a noble brass chorale emerges, but neither this nor the following finely crafted climax manage to change the prevailing mood of subtle melancholy typical of late Romantic Scandinavian composers. This arrangement by Franco Cesarini will allow your audience to get to know this great composer unknown to most.
