Chorale and Variations (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

As the title suggests, this piece comprises a set of variations on an original chorale, which is presented in the opening bars. The chorale uses the dark middle and lower sections of the band and is extended with minor variations until a pause leads to the first real variation, marked Vivo. This is in the form of a moto perpetuo. The second variation is a beautiful Andante introduced by a solo clarinet. Following a full band climax the final variation opens with quiet, nervous energy until its main theme is introduced. The chorale makes a brief appearance until the main theme reappears. This leads to a triumphant final augmented statement of the chorale theme, decorated by the florid clarinet theme in the upper woodwinds. A dazzling concert work.Duration: 14:00

MOCKBEGGAR VARIATIONS (Concert Band) - Woolfenden, Guy

Includes: Prelude, Theme and Five VariationsUnlike my other pieces for concert band, Mockbeggar Variations has no roots in any of my work for the Royal Shakespeare Company, but resulted from a commission by Robert Roscoe for the Berkshire Youth Wind Orchestra, with funds provided by the Berkshire Young Musicians Trust. Robert, on learning that I was stuck for a suitable title, and noting my penchant for the unusual, suggested the address of the Trust - Mockbeggar House - might take my fancy. The Prelude hints at the melodic and harmonic material of the Theme, which appears in the thirty-first bar, distributed between various solo instruments and small groups of players. The five succeeding variations are contrasted in mood, tempo, style and instrumentation.A large part of the score was written in a chalet high in the Swiss Alps with a continual clangour of sixteen different pitches of cow bell constantly ringing in my ears. There is no Mahlerian hint of this in the music, nor was my wife, Jane, successful in shooing the cows away or muffling their bells.....! - GW

    Oakdale Variations - Earl

A exceptionally nice composition for developing bands that utilizes a set of variations based on an eight bar melodic motive. All sections get chances to shine and the contrasts between the individual variations give the piece a distinct sound which is both appealing and educational. An impressive composition for this grade level that is a superlative choice for any concert or contest performance. Very highly recommended!

    Holly Variations - Mike Hannickel

An energetic addition to your Christmas concert, the Holly Variations merges "Deck the Hall with Boughs of Holly" (a duple-meter carol) with "The Holly and the Ivy" (a triple-meter carol). This unlikely partnership sets the stage for some very interesting rhythmic effects as two strong and opposing meters struggle for dominance. As a striking opener or a "contrast" piece, THE HOLLY VARIATIONS will add spice to your holiday performance.

Variations on a Pentatonic Theme - Rob Goorhuis

Rob Goorhuis wrote his Variations on a Pentatonic Theme (1987) for the Royal Wind band of Thorn, conductor Jan Cober. The work consists of five character variations on a pentatonic (five-tone) theme. The basic elements of the theme are the descending minor third and the descending major second, which in the course of the composition build up to a broad melody, unfolding itself in the final variation. The first variation resembles minimal music in its repetitive rhythmic motives. The second variation is explosive in character: rapid broken chords provide a background for soft solo motifs. The third variation is a quiet intermezzo on a slow chorale theme, creatingtwo contrasting moods. The fourth variation is a light-hearted scherzo. The final variation is a brilliant finale with all the necessary ingredients, or, in the composer's words, "the works" Testpiece WMC 2005 Concert Division.

Over the Rainbow, Variations on (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Arlen & Harburg - Phillippe, Roy

Initially this lush melody is presented with a soaring trumpet solo and warm full-band accompaniment. Then the variations include a cha-cha version and an oom-pah version. Consider programming all four Roy Phillippe variations to the Wizard of Oz, including "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" and "If I Only Had A Brain". A most creative set of arrangements!Duration: 5:45
