Where the Heavens Meet Earth - Jeremy Bell

is a beautiful, lyrical work for young band. Featuring flowing melodic lines and a beautiful four-note motive that transfers throughout the ensemble, the piece is a perfect mid-program work to feature the colors of the different instrumental sections, permitting opportunities to teach about blend and balance within the group. This original Jeremy Bell piece was inspired by the picturesque salt flats in Bolivia called Salar de Uyuni. Located in the Southwest near the Andes, the flats were formed by the transformations of several prehistoric lakes. With variations in elevation that average around a meter, the extreme flatness following a rain turns the 80-mile landscape into the world's largest mirror, reflecting the sky above. (3:30)

For Those Who Have Served - David Marlatt

provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass, or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. Sounding very patriotic in nature would make an ideal selection to be performed at a reflective event or simply to pay homage to the thousands of men and women who have served in the military or front line workers during times of crisis. The noble theme is first heard in a solo voice before moving to a more full sonority. A second theme with a very different feel is performed before the original soloist's sound brings this lyrical piece to peaceful conclusion. (2:45)

    Symbiopholie! - Jonathan Dagenais

"Symbiopholie!" is a work by Jonathan Dagenais that has two distinct sections that oppose and complete themselves at the same time. The first part is a slow march to emphasize with vigor the symbiosis of the ensemble---and the second part, double time, constitutes the unbridled craziness, lively and almost uncontrollable. The entire piece mixes together in a style reminding us of the origins of the military fanfares: the march. Colorful percussion and a unique blend of styles make this exciting piece something truly different on a concert or contest.
