Finale (from Symphony No.2, Little Russian) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Tchaikovsky, Peter Ilyich - Curnow, James
Throughout the years, composers have found inspiration for their works in simple folk melodies. Tchaikovsky loved Russian folk music all his life. Whilst composing his 2nd symphony, he was inspired by farmers' songs that fascinated him during a stay in Kamenka (near Kiev). He composed this symphony in 1872/73 and used the melody from the song The Stork as the main theme for the Finale. James Curnow's transcription of this 19th century masterpiece allows you to bring your contest or concert performance to a fitting Finale.Duration: 10.15

Slane (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wagner, Douglas E.
It seems that as the years go by, almost every society develops music that is from the people, folk music. This charming Irish folk melody develops very nicely and is a wonderful vehicle to teach and investigate the concepts of phrasing and dynamic shading.Duration: 3:15

Jig (from St. Paul's Suite) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Holst, Gustav - De Meij, Johan
Together with his good friend Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst had a strong liking for the abundant folk music of the British Isles. This influence is heard in many of his works and is perhaps strongest in his Second Suite for Military Band and in the Saint Paul Suite for string orchestra. This work was composed in 1913 for the school orchestra of St. Paul's Girls School in London, where Holst was the Director of Music. The suite opens with this exuberant Jig, a dance originating from Scottish and Irish folk music in alternating duple and triple time (6/8 and 9/8), which has been expertly arranged for concert band. Suite Provencale (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
This 4-movement suite is based on authentic folk tunes from the beautiful southern province in France: the "Provence". The composer used an harmonic language respecting the popular characteristics, but on the other hand also contains some "spicy" notes (...just like the well known "Provencal sauce"!...). The instrumentation is very colourful, paying a lot of attention to the different timbres of both brass and wood winds as well as to the percussion section. Every movement has its own character: "Un Ange a fa la crido" (= An angel brought the creed/credo) is like a bourree, "Adam e sa Coumpagnou" (= Adam and his companion) is an old love song, "Lou Fustie" (= the carpenter) a fast dance and finally "Lis Escoubo" (= a whistle tune / popular ballad) is a farandole. In the latter, the old tradition of folk musicians who play a whistle with one hand and a drum with the other hand, is clearly represented during the first presentations of the one and only theme)Although this piece is not too demanding, a well balanced band is necessary to perform it successfully. Thanks to the contrasts and the varying colours, it keeps on holding the attention.Duration: 7:15

Puszta (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
In composing Puszta, Jan Van der Roost wrote folk dances related to Slavonic folk music. Its character and sounds are comparable to the Hungarian and Slavonic dances by Brahms and Dvorak and to the Hungarian Rhapsodies by Liszt. All the melodies, however, are newly composed, not adapted from existing dances.Duration: 11:30

Bulgarian Dances (part II) (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
Bulgarian folk music has a long tradition and numerous typical characteristics, such as particular dissonances and complex, irregular rhythms. In Bulgarian Dances (Part II) (which can be performed together with the previously published title Bulgarian Dances) Franco Cesarini has preserved the original spirit of Bulgarian folk music, yet has imbued it with a symphonic character and brought it into the concert hall. The three different movements give us a meditative, moving folksong and a lively dance, before a distinctly symphonic part leads to a glittering finale. 18:15
