The following notes have been excerpted by the arranger from those presented in the Introduction by Imogen Holst, daughter of Gustav Holst: Holst wrote this work in the spring of 1932, while he was guest Lecturer in Composition at Harvard University. He had been asked by Nathaniel Shilkret to write 'a short radio piece, not longer than five or six minutes.' for a composers' series on folk music themes. Holst wrote to me on 13 May 1932, saying: 'On May 1 I started sketching a piece for Shilkret's Radio jazz band in New York. I finished the sketch on the 4th and the full score on the 8th... Shilkret wanted something on American airs but I've left them out because I prefer my own so he may reject the thing.' Shilkret was enthusiastic about the piece, but he was unable to use it for his series. 'I hate to give it up,' he told the composer, 'but I cannot play it because it is not based on a definite English or American folk theme.' Holst never revised his hurriedly-written work, probably because he had too many other things to write during the remaining two years of his life, when he was having to spend a good deal of his time in hospital. The autograph manuscript of his original full score is in the British Library, MS Add.47833. The work had no name: Holst referred to it either as his 'Jazz band piece' or as 'Mr. Shilkret's Maggot.' The score needed editing. There were gaps and patches, with incomplete dynamics and phrase marks. I made the version for orchestra and named it 'Capriccio' in spite of the viola's (now saxophone's) expressive opening, because from the moment of the marimba's first animated remark there can be no doubt about the mood of the music. - Imogen Holst (1968)

Windfall should be taken at a steady march tempo, with full note values and is a useful piece for developing a good band sound. Dynamic changes are particularly important to avoid monotony in the overall sound and young players are introduced to the concept of D.C. al fine.Titles in the Prelude Series are specifically scored for bands with few, if any, bass instruments but will sound well on larger ensembles. The bass line is playable by any combination of bass clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone, trombone, euphonium or tuba; in the event that none of these is available, the part for trombone/euphonium (B flat TC) can be played by tenor saxophone. The tuned percussion part is entirely optional and can be played by any available instrument(s). Each piece also includes a preliminary exercise. New Orleans-born composer and pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk's (1829-1869) Grand Tarantelle for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 67, was published in Paris after the composer's sudden death in Brazil in 1869. While no score for this 'moto perpetuo' work was found, the instrumentation used for this arrangement is based on parts located for the original orchestration. The piano part is the original composer's edition, while the band arrangement takes full advantage of the many colors of the concert band. The arrangement is well within the technical limits of good concert bands, so little rehearsal time with the soloist will be required.

Keep the Faith - Score and Parts - Duncan Stubbs
Program NotesKeep the Faith originally started as a personal tribute to my late mother. Not long after writing the opening ideas I was approached to write music to accompany a rendition of the poem "We Will Keep the Faith" by Moina Michael for performance as part of the 100th Anniversary of the start og World War I. The appropriateness of the music already written and the sentiment behind both concepts was a coincidence too good to overlook. Rarely sentimental and always practical I feel sure my mum would be delighted that the music she originally inspired was being used to portray a much wider universal message of remembrance.Whether performed with or without the poem a fully sustained sound should always be aimed for. The 'bugle' call at bar 20 and again at bar 76 should reflect a distant call across the trenches, the cornet remaining prominent over the upper woodwind. The tempo indication is a guide only and allowance must be made for the acoustic in which the piece is performed. The music must always flow, but appropriate rubato should be freely used together with appropriate tenuto in the middle of phrases.- Duncan Stubbs
