Originally written by the great English writer J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), The Lord of the Rings has encountered new-found popularity recently with the release of three ?huge-hit? motion pictures. With Bilbo the Hobbit we enter the lands of Middle-earth during the Third Age, some decades before The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Fascinated by the works of the masters of film music, Maxime Aulio structured this work in their way. Coogee Funk is a wild and fast paced exploration of funk riffs and rhythms. Inspired by a trip to Sydney in 2005, it is divided into three core sections. The work opens with a blazing brash fanfare that, after a distant call from an off-stage saxophone quartet, subsides into a drunken nautical seascape. After a series of solos from flugel horn and saxophone the work charges headlong into a wild funk fugue which soon rears out of control. A lonely horn solo brings the piece to a melancholic close.

The noble theme is first heard in a solo flugel horn before moving to a fuller sonority. A theme with a very different feel has melody in the flute and alto saxophone before the flugel horn sound brings this lyrical piece to peaceful conclusion.

Einar Englund (1916-1999) was a major Finnish composer of symphonies, concertos and film music. His first symphony (1946) bears the title "War Symphony", not given by the composer. He preferred to think think of it rather as a euphoric shout of joy at living to survive the hells of war. The first movement Tempo di marcia depicts seemingly never-ending marching through Karelia during the Soviet-Finnish war. Influences from Sibelius and Shostakovich are present.American conductor Robert J. Ambrose's arrangement of Englund's Tempo di Marcia is scored for wind band. The duration is 9 minutes.
