In Quiet Times - James Swearingen

This beautiful ballad offers plenty of opportunities for focusing on musicality with little concern for technical demands. The humble melody in the clarinets and horn is answered first by flutes then trumpets, before the glorious key change. As beautifully as it began, the piece fades back to a final "quiet time." Resurgence of Sound - Ryan Meeboer

was composed by Ryan Meeboer to celebrate the perseverance of instrumental music education during the COVID-19 pandemic. This piece provides ample opportunity to work on several musical elements, such as articulations, syncopated patterns, balance, tone, dynamic, and rhythmic shifts---all while performing fun, uplifting, and dramatic melodic material. Every instrument is given the opportunity to perform the melody at some point, making it exciting for all musicians to play. The piece was composed for a band at the Grade 1.5 level, but includes advanced parts for the flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, horn, and trombone/baritone. These parts add range, technique, and control that is at the Grade 3 level. This offers the opportunity for more advanced players to play these parts with more flourishes while the majority of the band can play at a Grade 1.5 level.

The Maid of the Mist - Herbert L. Clarke / arr. David Marlatt

This fun light piece is a great showpiece for the cornet. It is named after the sight-seeing boats for tourists in Niagara Falls. Set as a polka, there is much opportunity for the soloist to display quick fingers and light triple tonguing. To create a clean new edition, dynamics and articulations were made more consistent in the parts. Other items were changed to reflect the bands of today including F Horn parts rather than E-flat and the percussion parts have been reorganized. This is the first time this work has been available with a full conductor score rather than a piano reduction.

Scenes of Wonder - Mark Williams

by Mark Williams is a suite in three movements, each expressing the different emotions felt when visiting certain "scenes of wonder" in Europe. The first movement, "Stonehenge," with its intricate harmonies and "rock solid" style, depicts the power and mystery of the ancient stone monument. The second movement, "The Louvre", is written in an impressionistic style and features beautiful solo opportunities for trumpet, trombone and horn. The suite concludes with "Fiesta de Pamplona," a rollicking "paso doble" in 5/4 time conveying the excitement of the "runing of the bulls" in Pamplona, Spain.
