A Million Suns at Midnight - Steven Bryant
Though somewhat dark and dramatic in character, A Million Suns at Midnight is ultimately a hopeful, optimistic work, evoking the struggles of humanity to grow, achieve, and evolve, finally overcoming our fear (and its most common manifestation: violence) to transcend our physical and mental boundaries. Individuals now possess an unprecedented technological capability for both creation and destruction, and we must ensure that the million suns at midnight are not those of fiery destruction, but of bright hope. A Million Suns at Midnight is an appropriate and dramatic concert closer, and is constructed so as to require minimal rehearsal time with the full ensemble, allowing each section to work on their parts separately and assemble the whole quickly and confidently. NOTE: This work is available as a rental item directly from the composer. For details, e-mail [email protected]. The score is also available separately for purchase from Hal Leonard.

San Pedro de Alcntara - Valdemar Gomes
The Spanish war galleon with 64 cannons, built in Cuba between 1770 and 1771 for an English shipowner in the service of the King of Spain left Peru for Cadiz in 1784 with a huge cargo of copper, gold, silver and other valuables on board. There were also more than 400 people on board, including passengers, crew and Inca prisoners after a revolt. The Atlantic crossing went smoothly, passing Portugal to take advantage of favourable winds. The shipwreck off Peniche was the result of human error, apparently due to French maps with dramatic errors in the position of the islands of Berlengas and neighbouring islets. On 2 February 1786, the sea was calm and the night clear, but they hit the rock formation Papoa and the hull immediately broke in two. The bottom sank quickly, while the deck remained afloat for some time. 128 people lost their lives, including many Indians who were trapped in the basement. This shipwreck is considered one of the most important in maritime history. What the composer wants to convey, and what can be felt as one listens, is first of all the sound of power, of hope, of the glory of conquest, of the splendour of wealth. This is followed by the perception of the maritime environment, the harmony with the softness of the ocean, the gliding of the hull in the foam of the sea on sunny, blue days. But along with this tranquillity, you soon hear a rhythmic chain that makes you feel a representation of the hustle and bustle, of the busy crew, of the hard work of a sailor, of the desperation of an exotic people imprisoned in a dark, damp cellar. A distinct rhythm that reminds us of the "salero" of Andalusia, with its Arab influences and its people, the soothing of the resignation of others who are forced to submit. Then we clearly hear a crescendo that makes us imagine the agony of the collision that precedes the shipwreck. The breaking of the hull, the water flooding everything, the despair, the clash of bodies on the rocks, the tragedy to come. Before the "grand finale", in which the return of musical softness reminds us that the story is over. The supremacy of nature over human greed. The waves, though gentle, sweep the wreckage, the lives and the treasures of the New World to the bottom of the sea.

Ever Forward, Ever Onward - Amy Webb
Ever Forward, Ever Onward is a wonderful piece written in concert B-flat and only uses notes within the scale. The clarinets do not go over the break. If students have been playing for at least a semester, this piece will be just challenging enough to make them want to work, but not so hard that they give up. The lines are interesting, too, no matter what instrument you can play. Students will love to play this and I hope you have fun. 1st trumpet's highest note is A.

Celebration Of A New Day - Amy Webb
Here's an upbeat piece that evokes a sense of positivity and hope. It is a bit majestic and joyful all at the same time. It is an easy piece, and it is a great composition to introduce dotted rhythms. Only the 1st clarinet crosses the break, and the 1st trumpet's highest note is D.

Caleidoscopio - Lorenzo Pusceddu
The incommunicability between different cultures and worlds and the confusion that this generates lie at the heart of this work: the fanfare-like themes that characterise the introduction, together with the "Arabian" melodies of the Presto, represent these differences. The bare theme of the Andante, while offering a glimpse of hope, also describes the impossibility of a meeting and the pain this situation causes. The empty fifth and dissonance of the minor second are elements that feature throughout this work. In the Coda, moreover, all these ideas reappear "kaleidoscopically", amidst a convulsive and excitingly chaotic atmosphere.

San Carlo - Lorenzo Pusceddu
Ugo Papurello, president of the ''I Filarmonici'' band from San Carlo Canavese (Turin), commissioned this piece to celebrate the group's twentieth anniversary. The opening fanfare is an eloquent and fitting introduction to a solemn celebration. It is followed by the allegro, which has a modal feel and is characterised by a succession of rhythms representing the liveliness ad enthusiasm that have always characterised this band. The andante symbolises a moment of reflection and nostalgic reminiscence. The allegro is repeated as an expression of the hope that the band will continue to set itself increasingly ambitious goals. The fanfare brings back the joyous atmosphere of this special occasion and sets a formal seal on the band's twentieth anniversary.

Elegy for A Young American - Ronald Lo Presti
Written to honor the memory of President John F. Kennedy, this somber work has been a staple in the repertoire for many years and is on most lists as one of the top pieces in literature. It is our hope that by this re-promotion, a new generation of band directors and musicians will become familiar with this classic work.
