Rejoice In Glorious Hope - Claude T. Smith
Another in a series of symphonic works based on a chorale; this being Rejoice the Lord is King. Strong rhythmic patterns in percussion and woodwinds against a melodic motive boldly stated by the brass open this intense concert work. A calm development section in the middle featuring solos by euphonium and trumpet leads to a full lush statement of the chorale before ending with powerful ensemble writing above driving percussion. A truly masterful setting for the symphonic concert band.

The Bell of Hope - Hayato Hirose
The piece was commissioned by Shobi College of Music (Tokyo, Japan) for their entrance ceremony for freshman students in 2010, premiered by Shobi Ceremonial Wind Orchestra (Hirohisa Takanashi, conductor). In the introduction, woodwinds and euphonium play a solemn passage, followed by a brilliant fanfare in brass and percussion. After the heart-warming middle section, banda trumpets and trombones play a polyphonic passage, which leads to a grand andmagnificent finale to conclude the work. This is a short but solemn and impressive piece that suits any kind of festival, ceremony and concert.

River of Hope - Michael Sweeney
The centerpiece of this work for band is the memorable Appalachian folk hymn Down to the River to Pray, which was featured in the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou? Interspersed with this melody is a faster original theme thatprovides a complementary yet contrasting tone to the emotional statements of the folk hymn. Richly scored and flowingly beautiful. Dur: 4:25 (Grade 2-1/2)

Song for Hope - Michael Sweeney
Written as a memorial for a middle school band student, this sensitive and moving work opens with a chorale played by off-stage brass. A flowing melody stated in the low register is then developed before leading to a brieffanfare-like affirmation. The Korean folk song You and I is briefly quoted before returning to the off-stage brass and calm closing passage. A beautifully scored lyric piece for band. (Extra players are not required for theoff-stage parts.) Dur: 4:30
