Hymn at Twilight - Philip Sparke

Although specifically describing the uncertainty of approaching night and an evening prayer, Hymn at Twilight is actually about the human emotions of doubt, insecurity, hope and resolve. This solemn piece opens quietly and introduces a recurring four-note rising figure. Optimism, anxiety and resignation alternate, with the flute taking centre stage. Brass and woodwind take up the chorale. The piece ends in a mood of sanguine optimism.

    Cantina Band - John Williams

Cantina Band (or Mad About Me) was written by John Williams in 1977 for the film Star Wars (later Star Wars IV: A New Hope). Even with quite a bit of the Star Wars music being quite well known, Cantina Band is literally in a style of its own. In the Star Wars-universe this style is called jizz, Williams' take on the more well-known genre jazz. Williams was tasked by Star Wars-creator George Lucas to make music that sounded like several creatures in a future century finding some 1930's Benny Goodman swing band music ... and how they might attempt to interpret it and ended up with Cantina Band #1 and #2. Both numbers are played in the legendary scene taking place in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina where Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi gets in a fight causing even the band to stop playing. The band, which goes by the name Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes, comes from the planet Clak'dor VII and specializes in jizz and the nearby, slightly older style of jatz. Performers of this music often go by the name "jizz-wailers", and the Bith people from Clak'dor VII are especially well suited for jizz-wailing since they can hold every note as long as they want thanks to a unique respiratory system - something many perhaps would like to be able to do in the performance of this arrangement as well. The arrangement is relatively faithful to Williams' original version, but with a somewhat different ending. Although the woodwind section undoubtedly has the biggest technical challenges, an understanding of the musical style is the very key to making the arrangement sound good - and here all groups must work together. Playing lightly but quite articulated, and very precise, will be an absolute necessity to get the music drifting off all the way to Tatooine. In measure 113 there is a small improvised solo in either trombone or trumpet, but if you want the real authentic Cantina Band-sound this is of course done on a steel drum.

    Quarantine - Thomas Doss

Like a dark veil, an ominous sense of foreboding takes hold across the world. A looming danger, one previously unknown to mankind, slowly approaches, bringing our daily lives to a grinding halt. A perilous virus gives us no choice other than to stay in our homes, leaving us unable to work in our offices or even visit family and friends. Something that has only been talked about in history books is coming to pass: a pandemic! The invisible danger expands more and more, and we feel paralysed by fear and fright. The distance between us and our fellow human beings increases. At the same time, we start to better understand something crucial: we have time again! People help each other out. Neighbourly assistance and support within one's own family becomes more apparent. We stand by each other. Suddenly we have the time for things that we did not have before. Time for reflection... A new era commences. Finally, hope reappears. We leave our houses, but nothing is quite the same anymore. With renewed strength, people begin to perceive the future in a positive and optimistic way once again. With greater attention and awareness of the here and now, we feel that, despite it all, we can be happy.Recorded by the Kobe College Wind Orchestra and its conductor Satoshi Yagisawa

Symphony of Freedom - Thomas Doss

"All men are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and are to meet one another in a spirit of brotherhood." This article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights forms the basic idea behind this majestic Symphony of Freedom. In each of the three movements, the composer picks another angle on this universal theme of freedom. In the first 'Cry for Freedom' it's the Dalai Lama of which the composer is a great admirer. The second movement 'Dream of Freedom' takes the photograph of the deceased three-year-old refugee boy Ailan Kurdi on the beach at Bodrum as a basis. The finale 'Freedom Above All' refers, besides a Bruckner quote, to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. This movement should be seen first and foremost as an affirmation of life, faith and hope for a better world.

Three Blind Mice - Bert Appermont

This composition is based on the children's song 'Three Blind Mice', of which the melody is featured in a range of variations: in a canon, in inversion, in minor, transformed, with changing harmonisations and orchestrations, and in different times and tempi. The work consists of three continuous, contrasting movements: 1) Mouse March: The mice cheerfully set off while the original melody is presented as a march. - 2) Hymn: In a tuneful hymn, the wonderful praises of the life of mice are sung. - 3) Catch Me If You Can: In an animated chase, the farmer's wife is trying to catch the mice. Following a stirring acceleration, she cuts off their tails in accordance with the lyrics of the song. I hope this work, with its humorous touch, will be a welcome contribution to the expansion of interesting repertoire for the lower divisions. - Bert Appermont

Ray of Light - Kevin Houben

Ray of light was composed for the 75th anniversary of the Royal Wind Band (De Heidegalm Berkenbos). The mining environment of Berkenbos (Heusden-Zolder, B) is a proof of what used to be one of the most flourishing industries inLimburg viz. the Mining Industry. Going down the shaft in the elevator for the first time was a sensational experience for every miner: the noise of the closing doors, the shock experienced when the lift cage started moving tofall down whizzingly into the deep at a speed of 30 km an hour. The opening theme of Ray of Light doesn't only reflect the bravery of the descending miners but also their anxiety, their doubt and insecurity. In the solo passage, the anxiety during the long walk in the dark through the mine corridors with only headlamps and mine lamps is clearly audible. Working in the mines wasn't without any danger. The very flammable and at times explosive mine gasesalways posed a hidden threat. Apart from that there was always the continuous danger of collapse. The beautiful choral movements are therefore an ode to the miners that left their lives in the mine. The eastern scale refers tothe multicultural character of the mining environment of Berkenbos with its many commercial shops and different types of housing inherent in mining architecture. The mining profession is still a very dangerous job, but at the endof the dark corridor the miners still see a beam of light as a sign of hope.
