Refraction (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hadermann, Jan

Refraction is a work that uses the entire band and all the colours it can possibly produce. As the title suggests, it was inspired the fascinating physical phenomenon known as refraction. Just like light is split and disbursed into all its colours, the main theme is split into little motives. As the individual motives are disbursed throughout the band, different sections become more prominent, only to recede into the general texture again. The work concludes with the fusion of all these elements in a monumental climax of movement, sound and colour.Duration: 17:30

Zero Gravity allows the listener to float in space as a Lydian melody in the flute provides a light, weightless feeling while the percussion accompanies on metallic instruments. Re-entry to Earth features a descending fanfare announcing the return of the ship through the atmosphere back to earth. Sinfonia for Winds in G minor, A 509 (Sinfonia fr Blser) - By Gaetano Donizetti / arr. Douglas Townsend

SINFONIA FOR WINDS (SINFONIA FR BLSER) in G minor, A 509 was written by Gaetano Donizetti (1798-1848) in April of 1817, when the composer was 19-20 years old. Donizetti's catalog includes more than a dozen works under the title "Sinfonia," with this particular early one composed in sonata form for flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns, and 2 bassoons already displaying the light, entertaining style that would become his trademark. This newly engraved version, edited by Douglas Townsend, includes detailed notes at the bottom of most pages, offering insight into the editorial decisions made in comparison to Donizetti's autograph score.

General Sherman (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jeanbourquin, Marc

General Sherman is a giant sequoia situated in the Sequoia National Park, in California. The naturalist James Wolverton named it in homage to the famous American general William Tecumseh Sherman. The impressive character of this sequoia inspired the composer, but the introduction could also evoke General Sherman arriving in the distance. Marc Jeanbourquin imagined how this giant could be in all its grandeur, attempting to climb into the foliage to find the light that filters from the top. But energetic passages indicate that the presence of the general is never far. The work concludes with a reminiscence of the initial theme, full of mystery.Duration: 5.15
