Mykonos (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Mykonos is one of the most popular of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean. The most important town is that of Mykonos, a harbour on the west coast. The most important source of income for the island is tourism. The magnificent landscape, in which white and blue dominate in the dazzling light, is the great attraction of the island. Apart from this, there are also many churches, chapels, windmills and a couple of museums--Mykonos is a truly ideal holiday destination. The Belgian wind band composer Johan Nijs captures impressions of the island's atmosphere in Mykonos. The work is written in a typically Greek style: two sirtakis are employed and the piece closes with a characteristic Greek presto. Greek sounds are also incorporated into the slower passages. 05:40

    General Sherman - Marc Jeanbourquin

General Sherman is a giant sequoia situated in the Sequoia National Park, in California. The naturalist James Wolverton named it in homage to the famous American general William Tecumseh Sherman. The impressive character of this sequoia inspired the composer, but the introduction could also evoke General Sherman arriving in the distance. Marc Jeanbourquin imagined how this giant could be in all its grandeur, attempting to climb into the foliage to find the light that filters from the top. But energetic passages indicate that the presence of the general is never far. The work concludes with a reminiscence of the initial theme, full of mystery.

Showdown for Band (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Showdown for Band was written as a compulsory exercise for the Third International Light Music Competition at St. Gallen, Switzerland in 1998. The intention of the composer was to write a piece in a light music style that would at the same time challenge the various bands, particularly in the area of rhythm. The work is divided into four parts: Opening, Ballad, Finale and Ending. Using melodies that are easy on the ear and varied instrumentation, many facets of the entire band are displayed. The solo in the middle part can be played by either soprano or alto saxophone, or even by a flugel horn. The impressive composition contains many musical elements, which makes the work an especially suitable piece with which to open a light classical concert 0:07:36
