Based on the hymn tune "My Shepherd Shall Supply My Need", this fantasia is a musical reflection of the biblical account of The Creation. A powerful programmatic piece that opens with the woodwind choir and as the piece develops the mood shifts to excitement and a feeling of exhilaration. The tension and musical drama is brought to a conclusion only in the last measure as the climax is suspended for a long electric moment with the decay of a single chime tone. Without a doubt this is David Shaffer's most aggressive work to date. Highly Recommended.

It was an interesting challenge to return to the form of a sinfonietta some twenty years after the last one. This work is not hugely problematic to play but was written without regard for technical demands, following a series of compositions that needed to take difficulty level into consideration. The work has five percussion parts but the tuned percussion, although desirable, can be omitted. As for the band parts, Oboe 2 is largely covered elsewhere but the colour of the cor anglais would be a definite enhancement to the overall sound. The work was written in 2025 when it seemed as if the world was a particularly volatile place.The first movement 'Foment' seeks to capture that menacing mood of unrest and the potential for violence that seemed to erupt without warning and without efforts to contain it from warmongers posing as peacemakers. The music is severe and focussed with just a short scherzo-like episode of levity to balance the quasi-military mood.'A Dream of Peace' takes a few moments to contemplate a different, more peaceful world and several ideas are considered before settling on the slow waltz-like melody. This uses a very tonal language but is given a particular hue by its use of sevenths and ninths and there are moments of stress which disrupt the tranquillity.In 'Call to Arms' the warlike mood returns with a sense of restless energy that drives the music to its conclusion.- Rob WiffinDuration: 14.00

Johan de Meij's first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The fifth movement expresses the carefree and optimistic character of the Hobbits in a happy folk dance; the hymn that follows emanates the determination and noblesse of the hobbit folk. The symphony does not end on an exuberant note, but is concluded peacefully and resigned, in keeping with the symbolic mood of the last chapter, The Grey Havens, in which Frodo and Gandalf sail away in a white ship and disappear slowly beyond the horizon. The Irish Washerwoman, the first movement of Leroy Anderson's Irish Suite, combines folk material with the composer's own whimsicality. The score was commissioned by the Eire Society of Boston and carries a dedication to Arthur Fiedler, who conducted its first performance on June 6, 1947 at Symphony Hall in Boston. The complete suite includes six melodies which range from the nostalgic to the humorous, from the plainly sentimental to the purely exuberant. Although the melodies come from overseas, the brilliant Irish Suite is typical of Anderson's nimble orchestration, ingenious charm, and happy inventiveness. This opening movement is a jig; brisk in tempo and gay in mood.This edition has been freshly re-engraved with a full-score for the first time, permitting articulation uniformity throughout the work.Duration: 3.00

A Spanish Promenade. This lively little piece is in a continuous with no changes of metre. Though the overall marking is 'steady', it is based on a cheerful Spanish dance with a distinctly carnival mood which provides plenty of rhythmic interest and a few other delights along the way; the middle section is only slightly more reflective. The original title was 'Spanish Promenade', but then it seemed that before setting off in this time signature you would probably need 'Juan' - or even two - for the road. AB grade 2.5Duration: 02:30
