This delightful work was composed in April 2023 by Andrew Wainwright as a tribute to Catherine Ramsdale, who was a member of the composer's church in Lewisville, Texas, and who passed away at the age of 88. The music is supposed to be evocative of Catherine's loving and caring spirit. Starting out in rather melancholy mood to reflect the sadness that Catherine is no longer with us in an earthly sense, the music moves into a more sprightly section which reflects her cheerful and positive personality. The Last Queen of Egypt. Queen Cleopatra ruled Egypt for over 20 years. She is one of antiquity's best-known women, in particular because of her relationships with Julius Caesar and, above all, Mark-Anthony, but also because the cause of her death remains a mystery. The work is split into three parts and performed without breaks. The first section begins with a bright introduction representing Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in nature and reminiscent of military music, this characterises the Roman general. But soon after, another theme emerges, softer and more melodic, symbolising Cleopatra's femininity. The two characters then combine on a faster tempo. The middle section of the work depicts the love that Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra feel for each other. This passionate relationship lasted ten years and produced three children. This is expressed by a warm and intense theme, just like the beauty of the Egyptian queen. The third and last section opens in a determined and military mood. Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra were often apart, the Roman general was often away on a campaign. They met up in Alexandria to celebrate their triumph. But, as the targets of the jealousy and ambition of Octavius, Julius Caesar's son, the lovers are trapped and await the inevitable conquest of Egypt by the Romans. When Mark-Anthony heard the false news that Cleopatra had committed suicide, he ended his own life. The Queen of Egypt, for her part, was imprisoned shortly afterwards. The two lovers remain one of History's most famous couples. This piece was commissioned by the Wind Orchestra of the town of Antony, near Paris, directed by Philippe Rossignol, to mark its 90th anniversary. Duration: 10.00

Gareth Glyn lives on the island of Anglesey, where the encircling sea has always been indivisible from the mythology, history and everyday life and work of its people. This cycle of short miniatures, in a light music vein, seeks to represent various aspects of the sea as seen from five vantagepoints around the coast of Anglesey. The whole work is bound together by recurring musical motifs which change their character according to the prevailing mood. 1. Llanddwyn (Reverie): Island of the Welsh patron saint of lovers, Dwynwen, whose marriage to Maelon was never to be, and who dedicated her life to God. 2. Malltraeth (Pastorale): A brisk walk along Cob Malltraeth, a high dyke built to keep out the sea. 3. Penmon (Intermezzo): From a vantage point by the sacred priory of St Seiriol, old sailing ships and modern yachts can be seen scudding by in Regatta week. 4. Cemaes (Scherzo): The bustle of children's play and donkey-rides on the beach in midsummer. 5. Moelfre (Elegy): In remembrance of innumerable souls lost in shipwrecks off this coast, including the Royal Charter with its loss of 452 lives.
