This composition exudes serenity and tranquillity, but also intensity and expressiveness - giving it similar qualities to earlier works by Van der Roost, like Canterbury Chorale and Adagio for Winds. Long melodic lines characterize the main themes that arise in different registers and develop through varying keys. The band rather sounds like an organ: the varying timbres and broad musical phrases fully justify the comparison with this majestic instrument. There is no bombast, and the work contains no exaggerated technical or rhythmic tours de force. On the contrary, from a lush richness it moves towards a softening final passage that culminates in a slowly fading final chord: following the many warm harmonies and grand melodies, this work concludes in a contemplative mood.

Interlude - Wilhem Stenhammar
Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) was a Swedish pianist, conductor and composer. His compositions include incidental music, operas, concerts, two symphonies and choral works. Initially influenced above all by Wagner and Bruckner, Stenhammar increasingly welcomed in his music a Nordic colour as well as melodic and rhythmic characters typical of Swedish folklore. Completed in 1921, the cantata Sngen (The Song) was Stenhammar's last major work, and its combination of harmonic richness and contrapuntal dexterity ensured it a warm reception.The Interlude connecting the two halves of the work is the only part frequently performed today. It begins by creating a serious and intimate atmosphere, then the music gradually unfolds in increasingly powerful sonorities. Towards the middle a noble brass chorale emerges, but neither this nor the following finely crafted climax manage to change the prevailing mood of subtle melancholy typical of late Romantic Scandinavian composers. This arrangement by Franco Cesarini will allow your audience to get to know this great composer unknown to most.

Based on a simple seven tone idea, the work develops from a gentle almost intimate mood towards a life- affirming climax. Robin Hoffmann, born 1984, studied composition and arranging at the Dresden College of Music. Since 2006, he has worked as composer, orchestrator and arranger for international film and concert productions. In 2010, the London Symphony Orchestra recorded his violin concerto at Abbey Road studios. His film music for Hero and A Father's Job won numerous international prizes.
