Triumphal March (from ) - Giuseppe Verdi / arr. Douglas A. Richard
There is a saying that "the test of great music is that it stands the test of time." While there have been many triumphal marches written by great composers, few are as well-known as this powerful and exuberant march from Act II of Giuseppe Verdi's 1871 grand opera, . This arrangement is orchestrated to showcase the richness and capabilities of the contemporary wind band and is based on the early 20th Century setting by the famous Italian bandmaster and composer Giuseppe Creatore. Corcoran Cadets - John Philip Sousa / arr. Frederick Fennell
Sousa's second decade of writing marches began with The Corcoran Cadets (1890). The piece is an eighth-note march designed more for sit-down playing, rather than for the field. It seems as though Sousa set out to compose a march that would be produced with minimum resources, yet be rhythmically neat, textrurally clean, harmonically and melodically satisfying, and stylistically unique by his own standards. It was the first march performed by The Eastman Wind Ensemble, led by Frederick Fennell, closing their first NBC broadcast in 1953.

Fiat Lux (March) - Howard Cable
In 1951, during the war in Korea, Canada's National Defense Department produced a radio series titled "Voice of the Army". The Howard Cable Concert Band was the main stay of this patriotic/public relations program. Half the musical content was military, the balance 50's pop. Thirty nine programes required two marches per show. I composed eight and at the war's end the music went to storage. Some years later I re-constructed several of these forgotten scores; one of which is Fiat Lux - Dedicated to the University of Lethbridge.
