    Symbiopholie! - Jonathan Dagenais

"Symbiopholie!" is a work by Jonathan Dagenais that has two distinct sections that oppose and complete themselves at the same time. The first part is a slow march to emphasize with vigor the symbiosis of the ensemble---and the second part, double time, constitutes the unbridled craziness, lively and almost uncontrollable. The entire piece mixes together in a style reminding us of the origins of the military fanfares: the march. Colorful percussion and a unique blend of styles make this exciting piece something truly different on a concert or contest.

To Absent Friends - R. Christopher Teichler

It is common to have a toast "to absent friends" at ceremonies or receptions. While not limited to military functions, it is in this context that the toast often seems the most special and appropriate. This heartfelt piece is a tribute to those who have served in the armed forces and are no longer with us. (3:45) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

A Somerset Rhapsody - Gustav Holst / arr. Douglas E. Wagner

Written at the peak of the early 20th century period of intense folk music interest in Great Britain, draws upon tunes collected by Cecil Sharp (to whom the work is dedicated) in his travels throughout that area of exceptional natural beauty in Southwest England. Holst chose three of these folk songs that are seamlessly presented in this arrangement: the pensive "Sheep Shearing Song," the bold "High Germany," and the doleful "The True Lover's Farewell." Penned in 1906, displays definite hints of the iconic (1909) and (1911) for military band soon to come. This arrangemment by Douglas E. Wagner, is an excellent way to introduce your students to the music of Holst. (2:50)

The Last Full Measure of Devotion - Robert Jager

This work is a tribute to the many men and women who have served in the U.S. military and, particularly, those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The music begins as if in a mist, with musical fragments gradually being heard, and various images being created. These fragments eventually join to form longer themes that move from sorrow to strength to pride. In the end, a solemn hymn is heard that serves as a benediction with one last call from the trumpet.

Entrance of the Shogun - David Marlatt

In ancient Japan, the shogun were the military commanders appointed by the emperor. Grand and regal, when a shogun appeared to the public, there was a sense of awe and power at this warrior leader. Flanked by armies of samurai warriors, their power was obvious and their respect was demanded. This clever piece for very young band uses only the 5 notes used in a pentatonic scale (like playing just the black keys on the piano). This gives this beginning band piece a true Asian sonority. Fiat Lux (March) - Howard Cable

In 1951, during the war in Korea, Canada's National Defense Department produced a radio series titled "Voice of the Army". The Howard Cable Concert Band was the main stay of this patriotic/public relations program. Half the musical content was military, the balance 50's pop. Thirty nine programes required two marches per show. I composed eight and at the war's end the music went to storage. Some years later I re-constructed several of these forgotten scores; one of which is Fiat Lux - Dedicated to the University of Lethbridge.

    Encircled - Jonathan Dagenais

"Encircled" puts recurring rhythmic passages in the foreground, reminding us of traditional military music. These passages are always enveloped in more modern sonorities and harmonies in order to combine tradition and modernity. Right from the first notes, we can hear the melodic/rhythmic motif which will serve as the main musical material throughout the whole work. With cadenzas, flowing lyrical writing, and powerful rhythmic drive, this is an exciting and dramatic work.
